Night 3 Dr Ralph Ryan 69.CS-T

Dr. Ralph Ryan, 69, a retired cardiologist who lives in a Chicago suburb, goes out six nights a month with the Night Ministry. He’s got a little fold-up office and a privacy screen to preserve his patients’ dignity. Why does he do it? “I enjoy serving the underserved,” he says. “I started on the bus” — a medical clinic on wheels that the Night Ministry sends into low-income areas — “then gravitated to street medicine.” His viewpoint suggests a fact few people know: the poor are more fun to work with than the rich; be human with them and they can be richly human back.
