New Zealand ordered mass evacuations from the coastline after three earthquakes struck the region; anticipating traffic tie-ups, the government suggested leaving on foot or by bicycle. The biggest of the quakes measured 8.1 magnitude, centered 1000 kilometers (620 miles) northeast in the Kermadec Islands. No injuries were reported and by late afternoon the tsunami threat had passed. (Mike Dinsdale/NZ Herald)
