Old StPauls Auctions Collection Plate & Chalice

Old St. Paul’s, the oldest church in Baltimore, has accumulated quite a few assets since 1692, including this jewel-encrusted collection plate and a diamond-studded silver chalice. They’re worth so much the parish can’t afford to use them, so it keeps them under lock and key for decades at a time. Now they’ve decided to sell, to endow a scholarship fund to send a Black kid to four years at St. Paul’s prestigious private high school in suburban Brooklandville. This is part of an anti-racism initiative at the parish. “We have some wrongs to right here,” rector Mark Stanley said. “We want to make a difference, to address systemic racism.” They hope to raise $75,000 from 15 silver pieces, on their way to a $300,000 fund; the collection plate and chalice themselves might bring $60,000 at auction.
