The New York Philharmonic played its first concert for an audience in over a year Wednesday, with an hourlong performance before a socially-distanced, masked crowd of 150 at The Shed in Hudson Yards, an alternative space while Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center is being renovated. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducted 23 string players, but no brass or woodwinds, in works by Caroline Shaw, Sibelius and Richard Strauss. The Philharmonic hopes to start regular subscription concerts in late September, while in Washington, the John F. Kennedy Center announced it plans to offer a jam=packed season of 12 Broadway musicals starting in mid-October. (Kathy Willens/AP)
