Deacon Peter Cassey, the first Black man ordained by the Episcopal Church west of the Mississippi River, co-founded a number of churches in California, North Carolina and Florida, including St. Cyprian’s, San Francisco. His wife Anna Besant Casey was pressed into service too, charged by the Bishop of California to hold down the fort at St. Philip’s in San José, Peter’s second startup, while he was sent to San Francisco to start Christ Church, a multiracial congregation with a Black and Asian congregation. That parish eventually evolved into St. Cyprian’s and several others. (Claudio Carvalhaes)
