Dr. José Gregorio Hernandez, a physician known as Venezuela’s “doctor of the poor,” was beatified Friday at a small, nationally-televised ceremony at a school chapel north of Caracas. Hernandez, who died in 1919, “believed that medicine was a priesthood of human pain,” said his friend Dr. Luis Razetti, a prominent Venezuelan physician. Hernandez was killed while crossing a street to deliver medicine to an impoverished patient. Pope Francis was represented at the service by the papal nuncio, who said, “It seems providential to celebrate the beatification of a doctor in the midst of a pandemic that affects all of humanity,” Giordano said. “In the figure of Blessed Dr. José Gregorio, the church today pays a tribute of recognition, gratitude and prayer to medical and health professionals.” )Atiana Cubillos/AP)
