Richard Robinson has died, the chief executive of Scholastic Inc., the world’s largest publisher of children’s books. He was the son of the company founder, but he wanted to be a serious writer, not a bookseller; that ambition served him well when he did join as an associate editor of Scholastic’s ubiquitous classroom magazine. Under his leadership the company moved from mail order sales and book fairs to digital publishing of bestselling authors, including J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series. In 2017 he received an honorary National Book Award for his contributions to literature, and at his death Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden tweeted Sunday, “Robinson was a giant and a legend in children’s literature.” (Evan Agostini/Invision/AP, 2017)
