Melania the Elder spent the first part of her vocation in Alexandria, Egypt, where she used her large fortune to support monastics, teachers and pilgrims while she studied with the desert mothers and fathers. When St. Athanasius died, a new Arian bishop came in and started purging the monasteries, she and others fled to Jerusalem, where she established two monasteries on the Mount of Olives; her hospitality was a blessing to the many women pilgrims. SAhe was outspoken in expressing her theological views, stressing unity. On a trip to Rome she inspired her granddaughter Melania (the Younger) to return with her to Jerusalem and enter the monastic life. (Alchetron)
