While Covid vaccines are going begging in the United States, people are waiting anxiously in other countries, including wealthy nations like Australia (Sydney, above, this month) and Canada – while Haiti received its first shipment yesterday of half a million doses from the U.S., with more to come. Haiti is the last nation in the Western Hemisphere to receive a share of the vaccines, via Covax and the Pan American Health Organization, part of WHO. Haiti’s health minister says the shots will be free of charge, but didn’t say how or where they would be distributed; the country is in crisis since the assassination of its president a week ago. The current caseload is less than 20,000, an undercount because testing is not widespread. Australia has its own AstraZeneca manufacturing plant, but only 9% of the population has been fully vaccinated, and people under 40 are not yet approved because of supply shortages. Sydney has an outbreak of 900 cases, while politicians are pointing fingers at each other. Canada is also short on supplies. (Jenny Evans/Getty Images)
