Mandy & Manilow Back Home.David Tucker.The Daytona Beach News-Journal

This is a terrible time for manatees in U.S. coastal waters. They are starving to death for lack of sea grasses; more than 850 have died already this year, and 2020 broke records for manatee deaths. But these two, a mother and her calf, have been saved and returned to the St. Johns River near Blue Springs State Park in Florida – a rare case where there was plenty of food nearby, but Mandy, the mother, was overfeeding her calf (and starving herself), as first-time mothers are prone to do. Said Missy Gibbs, a Stetson University professor and president of the Friends of Blue Spring State Park, “She was so skinny. The baby was a butterball. He was fine.” Mandy’s calf was named Manilow, so we know that someone at Sea World was spending time in Vegas in the ’80s. (David Tuckerr/The Daytona Beach News-Journal)
