StJohn Cassian.450

As a desert monk John Cassian soaked up the richness of solitude of living alone in a cave in the desert, but when heresy battles took him to Gauk, he had to adapt his desert way of life – and his counsel to aspiring monastics who wanted to follow him. Living in community is not only acceptable, he said, it is necessary for spiritual growth and union with God to take place. Desert monks are always part of a praying community, and though their ways of connecting are different, they all seek the same spiritual unity. (source unknown)
