John Shelby Spong ENS

The former Bishop of Newark, New Jersey has died, the Rt. Rev. John Shelby Spong, known around the world as an unorthodox theologian who emphasized a polkity of inclusion, especially regarding LGBTs. He was the first Episcopal bishop to ordain an openly-Gay male priest in 1989, and eventually ordained about three dozen LGBTs in his diocese. He denied the resurrection of Christ, the virgin birth and the entire miracles-based revelation of Scripture, which brought him widespread condemnation, especially among those who want to exclude LGBTs; but huge numbers of laypeople appreciated him for not making people “check their brains at the door.” (Episcopal News Service)
