WNC Removes Confed Windows 2017 Evelyn Hockstein WaPo

Washington National Cathedral just announced the artists selected to replace two Confederate windows, above, removed in 2017, and to rework the space so it’s more than just typical pretty windows in a building full of artworks. Multimedia artist Kerry James Marshall will fill the area with racial justice themes, and poet Elizabeth Alexander will pen new verse to accompany his images. The old window featuring Robert E. Lee has been lent to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture for a new exhibit, “Make Good the Promises: Reconstruction and Its Legacies,” which opened today. The cathedral’s new installation is scheduled for completion in 2023. (Evelyn Hockstein/The Washington Post, 2017) .
