Powell & OBama J Scott Applewhite AP 2010

Colin Powell has died, the former U.S. chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and later secretary of state under President George W. Bush. He directed American forces during the Persian Gulf War, but gave a UN speech a dozen years later that turned into a disaster, full of untruths, claiming that Iraq was stockpiling weapons of mass destruction. The White House put him up to it, and though he rejected some of the more outlandish claims in the speech’s original draft, the assertions he made were equally unfounded. He later supported Barack Obama for president and offered blunt criticism of Donald Trump. Powell’s legacy improved over time and at his death he was considered a hero by most Americans. (J.
