Maya Angelou Quarter Emily Damstra & Craig A. Campbell

The U.S. Mint has started ditributing its first quarter-dollar coins featuring Maya Angelou, the poet, novelist, actress and activist. The design by Emily Damstra features an image of a bird soaring, in honor of Angelou’s novel “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” with a sunburst above it recalling her poem “Now We Rise.” Craig A. Campbell did the marvelous sculpting. Four other American women will join Angelou this year: Anna May Wong, the first Asian-American movie star, and Dr. Sally Ride, the first woman astronaut in space. Angelou died in 2014.
