4 Beatified El Salvador.Salvador Melendez AP

Four men, two priests and two laymen, were beatified yesterday in a grand ceremony in El Salvador, martyrs killed by right-wing death squads starting in 1977. Fr. Rutilio Grande, a Jesuit priest, was killed alongside two lay friends, Manuel Solorzano and teenager Nelson Lemus. Fr. Grande’s murder opened the eyes of Archbishop Oscar Romero, in 1980. Also kiled that year was a Franciscan priest, Fr. Cosme Spessotto, an Italian who ministered in El Salvador for 30 years. Pope Francis, a Jesuit, made Archbishop Romero a saint in 2018. As martyrs, the newest “blesseds” do not need any miracles to be beatified. The Episcopal Church celebrates Romero “and the Martyrs of El Salvador,” and these four martyrs are some of those included.
