Viking Clinker Boat 11C UNESCO Vik Ship Mus Roskilde DEN James Brooks AP

Last month UNESCO, guardian of World Heritage Sites, designated a new Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity: Viking “clinker” boats, wooden sailboats used for thousands of years by explorers, traders and raiders from five Nordic countries, which jointly submitted the nomination. Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden claim this ancient shipbuilding tradition, which is being lost to other methods and materials, like fiberglass hulls. The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark, west of Copenhagen, repairs and preserves the historic boats, including this one, dating to the 11th century. (James Brooks/AP)
