Dr. Lisa Cook, an economist at Michigan State University, was confirmed Tuesday by the U.S. Senate to a seat on the Federal Reserve board, which sets interest rates and monetary policy, She has worked at Federal Reserve Banks in four regions of the U.S. She is the first Black woman ever appointed to the powerful Fed – and hopes to be joined soon by economist Philip Jefferson, vice-president of Davidson College, who awaits confirmation; if he wins, he and Dr. Cook will mark the first time in U.S. history that two African-Americans have sat on the Fed Board at the same time.
