The decennial Lambeth Conference, now underway in Canterbury, is partly a social time among 650 bishops and their spouses from around the world. They sing, they dance, they pose for pictures – of the whole group, of the spouses and of the women bishops. At the first Lambeth attended by women, in 1998, attendance was 11; in 2008 they had 18. This year there are 97, so many that it’s hard to identify them as individuals; the number is the message. (Neil Turner/Lambeth Conference)
