The Southern Baptist Convention, Ameriuca’s largest Protestant denomination, is being investigated by the Justice Department over accusations it mishandled sexual abuse by pastors and senior leaders. The Executive Committee has been subpoenaed, but no individuals so far. The probe comes on the heels of a 288-page report by Guidepost Solutions which revealed that the Executive Committee had compiled a secret list of clergy accused of abuse, despite publicly claiming for years that such a list was impossible to create given the denomination’s polity. The annual meeting in June voted to create a way for local churches to check a list of those credibly accused before hiring prospective employees. The Executive Committee has apologized and now says all entities are cooperating with the Justice Department. (
