1st HS Football 2 Women Coaches Kirsten Stickney CS-T

It passed unnoticed, but last week two high school football coaches in Chicago made history when their teams met; they’re both women, the first time that’s ever happened. Fenger coach Jouscelyn Mayfield, left, and DuSable coach Konesha Rhea are good friends as well as members of an exclusive club; Mayfield won 50-0, but the coaches hugged afterward. Rhea called it “A horrible loss,, but it’s a win for the sport, a win for girls and women looking to coach football.” She said the unique occasion didn’t really dawn on her until the National Anthem was played to start the game. “That’s when it really hit me,” she said. “I was saying, ‘Wow, it’s me. God picked me and put me in his favor.’” (Kirsten Stickney/Chicago Sun-Times)
