Afghan Brickmakers.Ebrahim Noroozi AP

People are going hungry in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, where the economy has collapsed to the point that parents are forced to send even very young children to work at backbreaking jobs for very little money. These children are employed as brickmakers, paid $4 per thousand; it takes them a day and a half to produce that many. This is one of dozens of brickyards lining roads on the outskirts of Kabul; an AP photographer found these child laborers in July and published a photo essay this week; each shot is more heartbreaking than the last.
