Carlos Ximenes Belo East Timor Hero Nobel Prize 96 Sex with Minors.Neil Jacobs AP 1999

A Roman Catholic bishop and hero of the East Timor independence movement and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996, Carlos Ximenes Belo, has been accused of having sex with minors, sending shockwaves through the East Timorese population; it’s as if George Washington has been outed as a pedophile. But it does explain why Belo was suddenly retired 20 years early and allowed to shelter with the Salesian Order in Portugal, where he was ordered to have no contact with children. Then the order sent him to Mozambique as a missionary, where his main duties involved catechizing children. The revelation was recently published in a Dutch magazine and confirmed a day later by the Vatican. His current whereabouts are unknown. (Neil Jacobs/AP, 1999)
