An 11th Century mosaic of St. Clement of Rome in an unlikely place: St. Sophia of Kyic Cathedral. He’s one of the few Catholic saints honored in Orthodoxy; he was the first to declare that the Church was formed as a hierarchy by Christ and his trusted apostles. The apostles’ successors are called bishops, who appoint presbyters (priests) whose authority must be respected. In Corinth, younger priests tried to depose older priests, but Clement said it wasn’t their choice to make, it was the bishop’s.
