A handful of neighborhood activists and former parishioners were arrested yesterday as the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago moved a marble copy of Michelangelo’s Pietà from a closed church to an ongoing parish in the same neighborhood. St. Adalbert’s, a historic Polish church, was closed in 2019, decades after the neighborhood became Hispanic after Polish-Americans moved to other areas. Neighborhood leaders want to prevent St. Adalbert’s from being sold, but maintenance costs are more than they can pay. The statue will be reinstalled at St. Paul’s, a few blocks away.
