Oppression upon oppression, deceit upon deceit!
They refuse to know me, says the LORD.
Former U.S. Congresswoman Pat Schroeder has died; she was both a suburban mom with young children and a trailblazing feminist who became a national icon. Elected in 1972, she won re-election 11 times in her Colorado district. She was the first woman to serve on the Armed Services Committee, but had to share her seat with the first Black Congressman, because the committee’s crusty old chairman, a White Louisiana Democrat, didn’t think anyone but his kind were qualified. She chaired the bipartisan Women’s Caucus and passed the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, giving millions of workers the right to take time off to care for loved ones without losing their jobs, which was the first bill signed by President Bill Clinton. She was known for her witty retorts in debate, which made her something of a TV favorite; asked how she could raise little children and serve in Congress both, she replied, “I have a brain and a uterus, and I use both.” (Nick Ut/AP, 1999)
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us, but if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9
GENERAL CONFESSION
God of all mercy,

My joy is gone, grief is upon me,
my heart is sick.
Hark, the cry of my poor people

“Is the LORD not in Zion?
Is her King not in her?”

with their foreign idols?”)
“The harvest is past, the summer is ended,
and we are not saved.”

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

Br. Robert Lentz, OFM, detail: Louise de Marrilac. She was the illegitimate daughter of a nobleman, who claimed her without naming her an heir, but arranging for her to marry. Her husband got sick, and Louise, an active laywoman, vowed not to marry again if her husband died, and she received a vision that she would meet a new spiritual director, whose face she was shown. He was St. Vincent de Paul, and together they founded the Daughters of Charity, an order of nuns committed to active ministry with the poor. At her death they had 40 houses throughout France; now they’re working all over the world.

O God, call us into a deeper relationship to be your church for the sake of the world. Help us to see with new eyes the injustices within church and society. Call us to have a loving heart that respects and uplifts the humanity and dignity of every person; open our ears to listen and learn from the experiences of people whose skin is different from ours. Open our mouths to speak up about injustices. Join us with others to work for racial equity and inclusion for all people. Amen.
A Collect for Grace
Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty power; that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
