Stewart Rhodes, founder of the Oath Keepers, received his sentence yesterday after being convicted of seditious conspiracy in the January 6, 2021 Capitol Riot: 18 years in Federal prison. It is by far the longest sentence yet, after hundreds of convictions of other participants. Prosecutors sought 25 years, and Judge Amit Mehta told him he is a continuing threat to the U.S., saying, “The moment you are released, whenever that may be, you will be ready to take up arms against your government.” Six other Oath Keepers await sentencing, and Rhodes’ counterpart with the Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio, has also been convicted of seditious conspiracy; he’ll be sentenced later. Rhodes’ lawyer says he plans to appeal. (Susan Walsh/AP, 2017)
