This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

An Episcopal church in Fargo, North Dakota thinks so highly of Christian inclusiveness that they’ve commissioned a stained glass window for Gay, Lesbian, Bi & Trans people. The people of St. Stephen’s, Fargo, call this the Integrity window, after the LGBT caucus in the Episcopal Church; besides a rainbow flag and a commemoration of St. Aelred of Rievaulx, the patron saint of friendship, it includes these essential words from the Baptismal Covenant of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer: “Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?” To which the candidate for baptism replies, “I will.” (Valley News Live)

Thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, “I dwell in the high and holy place and also with the one who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite.” Isaiah 57:15

CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

London-born Sister Anne Ayres moved to New York in 1836, was stirred to action by the sermons of Fr. Muhlenberg, founded the Sisters of the Holy Communion, the first Anglican religious order in North America, and worked with him to found and staff St. Luke’s Hospital, which greatly improved acute care in the city. The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of humans and the seed of animals. And just as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring evil, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the LORD. In those days they shall no longer say:

“The parents have eaten sour grapes,
and the children’s teeth are set on edge.”

But all shall die for their own sins; the teeth of everyone who eats sour grapes shall be set on edge.

The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. William Augustus Muhlenberg was the great-grandson of the “father of Lutheranism” in the American colonies, Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, and the grandson of Frederick Muhlenberg, a pastor and member of the Continental Congress, later Speaker of the House of Representatives. William Augustus first made his mark as a teacher in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and led the town to establish one of the first public schools there; when he became a priest he continued to develop new educational theory and practice and is considered a forerunner of John Dewey, the great educational philosopher. Muhlenberg taught that a child who was not a great student in the beginning could become one later, with the proper guidance. When he turned to religious education, he made sure that rigorous standards still applied, even as he sought to make the school a religious community. (anglicanhistory.org)

Give us that vision and compassion with which you so richly endowed William Augustus Muhlenberg and Anne Ayers, that we may labor tirelessly to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy; through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LESSON
John 7:37-52 (NRSV)

On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.'” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

When they heard these words, some in the crowd said, “This is really the prophet.” Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some asked, “Surely the Messiah does not come from Galilee, does he? Has not the scripture said that the Messiah is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?” So there was a division in the crowd because of him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

Then the temple police went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why did you not arrest him?” The police answered, “Never has anyone spoken like this!” Then the Pharisees replied, “Surely you have not been deceived too, have you? Has any one of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, which does not know the law—they are accursed.” Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before, and who was one of them, asked, “Our law does not judge people without first giving them a hearing to find out what they are doing, does it?” They replied, “Surely you are not also from Galilee, are you? Search and you will see that no prophet is to arise from Galilee.”

Anglicans have prayed in their native languages since 1549 because of this man, Thomas Cranmer, author and editor of the Book of Common Prayer. He combined various prayers from the elaborate monastic Liturgy of the Hours to give us Morning and Evening Prayer, composing phrases and creating worship used throughout the English-speaking world. They did worse than their ancestors did.

So you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you. You shall call to them, but they will not answer you. You shall say to them: This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the LORD their God, and did not accept discipline; truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.

Cut off your hair and throw it away;
raise a lamentation on the bare heights,
for the LORD has rejected and forsaken

For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation.

It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.

Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For “no human being will be justified in his sight” by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus.

Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since God is one; and he will justify the circumcised on the ground of faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

St. Cyril was a catechist of the early Church, whose teachings were largely codified into the Nicene Creed. Students entered into a period of intense instruction with him prior to baptism at the Great Vigil of Easter; out of that Cyril developed the liturgical observances we now know as Holy Week. Great crowds of pilgrims descended on Jerusalem to hear him and participate. The observance of the Week of Christ’s Passion spread throughout the world; the 1979 U.S. Book of Common Prayer’s observances are based on the model developed by Cyril and his successor John. THE LESSON
John 1:1-7, 19-20, 29-34 (NRSV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.

This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.”

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

The U.S. Book of Common Prayer of 1979 completely changed the baptismal rite, which had been full of militant renunciation of sin, to one in which initiates vow to “seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself,” and to “strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.” It has transformed the Episcopal Church and made it far more mission-oriented, because all believers renew their vows at every subsequent baptism. After two generations it has permeated our thinking and speech.

Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

As a child Samuel Crowther was sold to Portugese slave-traders, but a British patrol ship intercepted them and took him to Freetown, Sierra Leone, where he was educated at church schools and became a teacher. He was ordained in 1843 and moved on to the Yoruba territory of Nigeria, where he translated the Bible and Prayer Book. He became Africa’s first Black bishop in 1864 and was the best-known African Christian of the century.

Pope Leo is remembered for his negotiations with Attila the Hun and the Vandals as the Roman Empire was crumbling, but he has other claims to greatness, including dozens of “five-minute sermons” in which he expounded on doctrine. But his most lasting contribution perhaps is his letter to the Council of Chalcedon in 451, in which he laid out the dual natures of Christ, divine and human, in his person – a matter of great controversy at the time – so persuasively that the assembled bishops declared the matter solved as if Peter himself had spoken. A man was quickly arrested, and has been described in media reports as an "erratic loner," which may cast doubt on the anti-immigrant theory; either way, what a tragedy this is. On All Souls’ Day every year our sites remember our patron saints, the Church Army evangelists who most influenced our founder and vicar. This photo is the best we can do to remember Bob Gillespie, of whom we can find no other photograph. He is best known as the editorial assistant and partner of Howard E. Galley, General Editor of the 1979 U.S. Book of Common Prayer. Bob was my classmate in Church Army training, which Howard led for many years in the U.S. After graduation Bob went to work for the Rev. Dr. H. Boone Porter, a professor of liturgics and missionary priest, at Roanridge, a farm and conference center for training clergy and laypeople in rural areas. He took Roland Allen's advice about identifying and empowering local leaders when he arrived in my home parish, even though I was just a teenager. For better or worse, everything we do on this site is related to something Ervin taught me. He was smart, funny, kind, shrewd, a master teacher, courageous civil rights leader and foot soldier for Christ. (family photo)

She was most closely associated with the Church and Theatre at St. Clement’s, off Broadway in New York City, a long-struggling parish which she kept together with duct tape, baling wire and sheer force of personality for decades until the money and growth plan finally kicked in, at which point parishioners demanded that their bishop ordain her; she consented to become a deacon only. In later years she was the keeper of the institutional memory and something of a liturgical and missionary diva, a role she perfected as understudy to Howard Galley. (Patti O’Kane)

Revelation 16:1-11 (NRSV)

Then I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels, “Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.”

So the first angel went and poured his bowl on the earth, and a foul and painful sore came on those who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped its image.

The second angel poured his bowl into the sea, and it became like the blood of a corpse, and every living thing in the sea died.

The third angel poured his bowl into the rivers and the springs of water, and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters say,

“You are just, O Holy One, who are and were,
for you have judged these things;
because they shed the blood of saints and prophets,
you have given them blood to drink.
It is what they deserve!”

The fourth angel poured his bowl on the sun, and it was allowed to scorch them with fire; they were scorched by the fierce heat, but they cursed the name of God, who had authority over these plagues, and they did not repent and give him glory.

The fifth angel poured his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness; people gnawed their tongues in agony, and cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and sores, and they did not repent of their deeds.

My mentor Howard E. Galley Jr. of the Church Army was the General Editor of the 1979 U.S. Book of Common Prayer and the man I consider most responsible for it, because he was the only full-time staff member of the Standing Commission on Liturgy. Hundreds of experts helped put it together - Leo Malania and H. Boone Porter were among the most influential; thousands of others helped shape it and hundreds of thousands tried out its various incarnations before the book was finalized. But I was there, proofreading the Psalter under Howard's supervision, and I saw and heard every day his encyclopedic knowledge of the contents, his wisdom in guiding it to adoption, his defense of it when others tried to derail it, and I was present the first time its famous Eucharistic Prayer C, which he wrote, was publicly celebrated. He was a liturgical expert who mastered Church politics, which is what it takes to see a new book through to final approval. Its influence is worldwide, from Africa to New Zealand and Canada - and while he was shepherding hundreds of sniping committee members, jockeying consultants and wayward documents, he also served as Dean of the Church Army training school at General Seminary, New York. I had a front row seat at the greatest show on Broadway, and Howard Galley was the star.
