The Rev. Gretchen Rehberg was elected IX Bishop of Spokane, Washington on Saturday. She has been rector of Nativity, Lewiston, for ten years and chairs the diocesan Commission on Ministry. She has two doctorates and is a former professor of organic chemistry, as well as a former firefighter and emergency medical technician. Pending consents, she will become the 59th female bishop in the Anglican Communion and the first in Spokane, a diocese covering eastern Washington and northern Idaho. (via Episcopal News Service)

See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. This is one of the most famous quotes in Christian history; Tyndale had absolute confidence that making the Scriptures available in vernacular language would lead to a better educated, more faithful Christian community, less dependent on priests and prelates to tell it what to believe. But this threatened the Roman hierarchy at a time Henry VIII needed the Pope’s permission to divorce – which Tyndale opposed. He was persecuted by Cardinal Wolsey at Henry’s direction and fled to the Continent; though by 1535 Henry adopted Tyndale’s argument in “The Obedience of a Christian Man” that kings should be head of national churches. But it was too late to save Tyndale from the Pope’s wrath, and he was finally caught and burned at the stake in Belgium. His translation survived and formed the basis of the Authorized King James Bible, where an estimated 76% of the Old Testament and 83% of the New Testament is Tyndale’s work.

They did not find me disputing with anyone in the temple or stirring up a crowd either in the synagogues or throughout the city. Neither can they prove to you the charge that they now bring against me. But this I admit to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our ancestors, believing everything laid down according to the law or written in the prophets. I have a hope in God—a hope that they themselves also accept—that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous. Therefore I do my best always to have a clear conscience toward God and all people. Now after some years I came to bring alms to my nation and to offer sacrifices. While I was doing this, they found me in the temple, completing the rite of purification, without any crowd or disturbance. But there were some Jews from Asia—they ought to be here before you to make an accusation, if they have anything against me. But Felix, who was rather well informed about the Way, adjourned the hearing with the comment, “When Lysias the tribune comes down, I will decide your case.” Then he ordered the centurion to keep him in custody, but to let him have some liberty and not to prevent any of his friends from taking care of his needs.

Fr. Huntington’s greatest international impact is his authorship of the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral, which sets out four broad bases (Holy Scripture contains all things necessary to salvation; the historic Creeds; the chief sacraments, Baptism and Holy Communion; the historic episcopate, locally adapted) on which the Anglican Communion discusses reunion with other Christian churches, and states a deep desire and commitment for the reunification of Christ’s Church.

The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD strengthened King Eglon of Moab against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the LORD. In alliance with the Ammonites and the Amalekites, he went and defeated Israel; and they took possession of the city of palms. So the Israelites served King Eglon of Moab eighteen years.

But when the Israelites cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a left-handed man. The Israelites sent tribute by him to King Eglon of Moab. Ehud made for himself a sword with two edges, a cubit in length; and he fastened it on his right thigh under his clothes. Then he presented the tribute to King Eglon of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man. When Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he sent the people who carried the tribute on their way. But he himself turned back at the sculptured stones near Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” So the king said, “Silence!” and all his attendants went out from his presence. Ehud came to him, while he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber, and said, “I have a message from God for you.” So he rose from his seat. Then Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into Eglon’s belly; the hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the sword out of his belly; and the dirt came out. Then Ehud went out into the vestibule, and closed the doors of the roof chamber on him, and locked them.

After he had gone, the servants came. When they saw that the doors of the roof chamber were locked, they thought, “He must be relieving himself in the cool chamber.” So they waited until they were embarrassed. When he still did not open the doors of the roof chamber, they took the key and opened them. There was their lord lying dead on the floor.

Ehud escaped while they delayed, and passed beyond the sculptured stones, and escaped to Seirah. When he arrived, he sounded the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the Israelites went down with him from the hill country, having him at their head. He said to them, “Follow after me; for the LORD has given your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him, and seized the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and allowed no one to cross over. At that time they killed about ten thousand of the Moabites, all strong, able-bodied men; no one escaped. So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest eighty years.

In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

The Rev. Tobias Haller: William Reed Huntington. He was the acknowledged leader of the House of Deputies at General Convention (Synod) for 36 years and author of the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral, which sets generous terms for the reunion of denominations; he had in mind Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism, but it’s become the standard Anglican reference for all unity proposals. He was also the force behind the restoration in 1889 of the ancient order of deaconesses and a liturgical scholar whose efforts at Prayer Book revision led to the 1892 edition of the U.S. book, offering unprecedented flexibility and spiritual enrichment. He was “Mr. Episcopalian.”

Morning Prayer 4.6.16, Pope John XXIII, 1963

Now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.

Cardinal Loris Francesco Capovilla died last week, Pope John XXIII’s personal secretary and “spiritual son.” He helped guide the preparations for Vatican Council II, the lengthy conclave at which Roman bishops agreed to reform the liturgy, including permitting the use of common languages understood by worshipers. Father Capovilla was a poor boy, always destined for the Church, who attended a seminary high school, and became a priest in Venice in 1940. He was a military chaplain during World War II and later became a journalist and religious broadcaster. He met Cardinal Angelo Roncalli, the future pope, when he was installed as Archbishop of Venice in 1950; they developed an instant rapport. When Roncalli was elected pope at age 77 in 1958, he took Capovilla with him. Capovilla was credited with providing wise counsel and public relations management in the run-up to Vatican II; the conservative hierarchy was fearful of public debate that might lead to change and a loss of control, but John XXIII won the support of the faithful by his humility and open affection. The council lasted two years and succeeded in modernizing worship; the Liturgical Movement affected Anglicanism deeply as well, including Prayer Book Revision in the United States. After the Pope’s death Capovilla devoted his life to John’s memory and legacy, publishing his diaries, even moving to the late Pope’s birthplace and helping to run a museum dedicated to his life. Successive popes heaped honors on the former secretary, but he retained his humility and love for his mentor for the rest of his life. When goods increase, those who eat them increase; and what gain has their owner but to see them with his eyes?

Sweet is the sleep of laborers, whether they eat little or much; but the surfeit of the rich will not let them sleep.

Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods. You are observing special days, and months, and seasons, and years. I am afraid that my work for you may have been wasted.

“Good Pope John” was widely assumed to be a caretaker when he was elected in old age after the long reign of Pius XII. But in the first year of John’s pontificate he called Vatican II, the ecumenical council which transformed much of Christianity for the 20th century; while he had breath in him he was not going to be a seat-warmer for another rigid conservative. He simplified the pomp and hoopla surrounding the papacy, a trend that Pope Francis is now taking even further. (Time magazine)

There is sin that is mortal; I do not say that you should pray about that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not mortal.

We know that those who are born of God do not sin, but the one who was born of God protects them, and the evil one does not touch them. We know that we are God’s children, and that the whole world lies under the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

The 1637 Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church of Scotland. Archbishop Cranmer’s English Book of 90 years earlier is famous for its eloquence, but what made it revolutionary was that it eliminated Latin, as Reformers had demanded, enabling the laity to pray in their own language. The various national Prayer Books, in all their editions, together form the shared spiritual heritage of Anglicans the world over.

As a child Samuel Crowther was sold to Portugese slave-traders, but a British patrol ship intercepted them and took him to Freetown, Sierra Leone, where he was educated at church schools and became a teacher. He was ordained in 1843 and moved on to the Yoruba territory of Nigeria, where he translated the Bible and Prayer Book. He became Africa’s first Black bishop in 1864 and was the best-known African Christian of the century.

Almighty God, you rescued Samuel Ajayi Crowther from slavery, sent him to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ to his people in Nigeria, and made him the first bishop from the people of West Africa: Grant that those who follow in his steps may reap what he has sown and find abundant help for the harvest; through him who took upon himself the form of a slave that we might be free, the same Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
