Now therefore amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, and the LORD will change his mind about the disaster that he has pronounced against you.

The U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, one step below the Supreme Court, has declared that discrimination against Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Trans people is illegal under the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 as discrimination on the basis of sex, though “sexual orientation” is not spelled out there. If upheld by the Supreme Court in future years, this would accomplish the first and most important goal of the LGBT civil rights movement. (Other circuit courts of equal standing have followed the wording of the act and disallowed claims based on sexual orientation.) The High Court will eventually have to resolve the legal conflict; meanwhile the case before the 7th Circuit, which originated at a community college in Indiana, will not be appealed, so the ruling stands law in three states, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. THE LESSONS
Jeremiah 26:1-16 (NRSV)

At the beginning of the reign of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah, this word came from the LORD: Thus says the LORD: Stand in the court of the LORD’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the LORD; speak to them all the words that I command you; do not hold back a word. It may be that they will listen, all of them, and will turn from their evil way, that I may change my mind about the disaster that I intend to bring on them because of their evil doings. You shall say to them: Thus says the LORD: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you, and to heed the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you urgently—though you have not heeded—then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.

The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD. And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, “You shall die! Why have you prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, ‘This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant’?” And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.

When the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of the LORD and took their seat in the entry of the New Gate of the house of the LORD. Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, “This man deserves the sentence of death because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.”

Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, “It is the LORD who sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard. Now therefore amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, and the LORD will change his mind about the disaster that he has pronounced against you. But as for me, here I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you. Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will be bringing innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the LORD sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”

Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, “This man does not deserve the sentence of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.”

Romans 11:1-12 (NRSV)

I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars; I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.” But what is the divine reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened, as it is written,

“God gave them a sluggish spirit,
eyes that would not see
and ears that would not hear,
down to this very day.”

And David says,
“Let their table become a snare and a trap,
a stumbling block and a retribution for them;
let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see,
and keep their backs forever bent.”

So I ask, have they stumbled so as to fall? By no means! But through their stumbling salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous. Now if their stumbling means riches for the world, and if their defeat means riches for Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean!

So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”

The Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus replied, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these are you going to stone me?” The Jews answered, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you, but for blasphemy, because you, though only a human being, are making yourself God.” Jesus answered, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods’? If those to whom the word of God came were called ‘gods’—and the scripture cannot be annulled—can you say that the one whom the Father has sanctified and sent into the world is blaspheming because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” Then they tried to arrest him again, but he escaped from their hands.

He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing earlier, and he remained there. Many came to him, and they were saying, “John performed no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true.” And many believed in him there.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the power of Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,

A deaconess in Hawai’i got to young Gee Ching Wu when she asked him to teach her Chinese in exchange for English lessons. Though hesitant, he became a Christian, took the name of Daniel and eventually followed her to California, where she established missions among Chinese immigrants in San Francisco and Oakland. He managed those sites while studying at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley; was ordained in 1912 and became Vicar of both congregations. He used to prowl the docks and points of entry looking for Chinese just off the boat, whom he helped integrate into the community. To maintain their cultural heritage while adapting to their new land, he taught Chinese to the children and English to the parents; his ministry of 36 years established the Episcopal Church’s ministry to Chinese Americans. We give you thanks, loving God, for the ministry of Daniel Wu, priest and pioneer church planter among Asian-Americans, and for the stable worshiping communities he established, easing many immigrants’ passage into a confusing new world. By the power of your Holy Spirit, raise up other inspired leaders, that today’s newcomers may find leaders from their diverse communities faithful to our Savior Jesus Christ; who with you and the same Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE LESSON
John 9:18-41 (NRSV)

The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” His parents answered, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but we do not know how it is that now he sees, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue. Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”

So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.” He answered, “I do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” Then they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” The man answered, “Here is an astonishing thing! The childhood home of civil rights lawyer, priest and feminist icon Dr. Pauli Murray in Durham, North Carolina has just been named a National Historic Landmark, according to the Diocese of North Carolina, which released this photo on Twitter. Built by her grandfather, a Civil War veteran, in 1898, the home is scheduled to open to the public in 2020.

For Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that “the person who does these things will live by them.” But the righteousness that comes from faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?'” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?'” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say?

“The word is near you,
on your lips and in your heart”

(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Staff Sgt. Austin Bieren died a week ago while serving as a security forces airman in northern Syria. The Department of Defense stated that he appeared to have died from natural causes in a non-combat situation. His mother Tracy Finck said joining the military had been her son’s plan from a young age. “He was amazing, kind, smart, always wanted to join the service,” she said. He leaves behind an “amazing” wife of six years, Rachel, sister Brianne Bieren and a nephew Jaren, “who he adored,” as well as parents Tracy and Jody Finck and John and Amber Bieren. According to Air Force Times, Bieren is the second American serviceman known to have died in Syria. There are currently about 900 U.S. troops there providing support to Operation Inherent Resolve. Bieren was assigned to the 21st Space Wing at Colorado’s Peterson Air Force Base. Peterson’s Facebook page said Bieren “was a valuable and beloved member of our team and will be sorely missed. His dedication to his country was evident in his actions – he was a superb Airman.”

Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which announced its closure last July and stopped admitting new students, is pursuing an affiliation with Union Theological Seminary in New York City, which would offer programs and certificates in Anglican Studies for Union seminarians. EDS, one of the smallest Episcopal seminaries, is quitting before its endowment, currently $53 million, runs out. Lizzie Wright, born in Georgia in 1872, relentlessly pursued higher education for herself and other African-Americans. She attended Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee Institute, then set off to South Carolina to found her own schools, which white arsonists burned down. She moved to friendlier territory in Denmark, S.C. and, with two colleagues, founded Voorhees College, which is still affiliated with The Episcopal Church today.

It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

Big Sur, California has been cut off from civilization with the failure of this bridge on the Pacific Coast Highway, which may topple into the sea at any moment. It’s some of the most scenic coastline in the world and attracts millions of tourists, but the 400 permanent residents pay a steep price to live there with only one escape route. Students and faculty at nearby Esalen Institute had to be evacuated, and the New Camaldoli Hermitage, a Roman Catholic monastery, has been closed to visitors (and income) for two months already. A temporary bridge may take a year to build; rainfall in Northern and Central California is the heaviest in over a century. (San Francisco Chronicle)

Hebrews 2:1-10 (NRSV)

Therefore we must pay greater attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. For if the message declared through angels was valid, and every transgression or disobedience received a just penalty, how can we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? It was declared at first through the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him, while God added his testimony by signs and wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, distributed according to his will.

Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. But someone has testified somewhere,

“What are human beings that you are mindful of them,
or mortals, that you care for them?
You have made them for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned them with glory and honor,
subjecting all things under their feet.”

Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Anna Cooper, born in slavery about 1859, was educated at St. Augustine’s University, married a professor, became an Episcopalian and had a long and distinguished career in education, civil rights and community organizing, especially in Washington, D.C. At age 65 she became the fourth African-American woman to earn a doctorate from the Sorbonne, Paris; at age 70 she became president of Freylinghuysen University and served until she was 82.

Brian P. Odiorne, a 2014 graduate of Pathfinder Regional Vocational Technical High School in Palmer, Massachusetts, was killed in Al Anbar province, Iraq, on 20 February. His death was not combat related, but details of how he died have not been disclosed. Odiorne, 21, joined the Army in October 2015 and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, since May 2016. He was trained as a cannon crew member. His decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Medal. He will be posthumously awarded the Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal and Overseas Service Ribbon.

Abraham Lincoln, America’s greatest president, had a fraught relationship with the abolitionist Frederick Douglass, whose support was always tentative and conditional while his criticism was vehement and fierce – at least until Lincoln was able to issue the Emancipation Proclamation and make it stick. Then they developed a deep mutual respect, and finally met.

In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to live in the country of Moab, he and his wife and two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion; they were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. These took Moabite wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. When they had lived there about ten years, both Mahlon and Chilion also died, so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.

Then she started to return with her daughters-in-law from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the country of Moab that the LORD had considered his people and given them food. So she set out from the place where she had been living, she and her two daughters-in-law, and they went on their way to go back to the land of Judah. But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back each of you to your mother’s house. May the LORD deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. The LORD grant that you may find security, each of you in the house of your husband.” Then she kissed them, and they wept aloud. On the 75th anniversary yesterday of the U.S. dispossession and internment of Japanese-Americans in World War II, Google commemorated Fred Korematsu, one of 120,000 citizens rounded up, who dared to challenge the constitutionality of President Franklin Roosevelt’s order, handed down two months after Pearl Harbor. The first time plaintiff Korematsu lost one of the worst Supreme Court decisions of all time; he was then shunned by many Japanese-Americans for causing trouble. But 40 years later an accidental discovery of once-classified evidence vindicated him. Roosevelt and government lawyers lied through their teeth claiming a military justification; the real reason was to encourage anti-Japanese racism and give the public a scapegoat. The best that can be said for Roosevelt, an Episcopalian, in this case is that he hoped the end justified the means. (google.com)

Frederick Douglass, the renowned U.S. abolitionist orator, was born into slavery in 1818, learned to read, was converted to Christ in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and escaped his master at the age of 20 to spend the rest of his life working to liberate African-Americans. He went on speaking tours, but the more famous he became, the more he had to worry about being captured and returned to slavery. He went to England in 1845 and while there, his American friends bought his freedom. He became a fierce critic of churches that refused to repudiate slavery.

The Bosnian war criminal Ljubisa Beara has died in prison, convicted of helping direct the slaughter of about 8000 Muslim men and boys in Srebenica in 1995, the worst genocide in Europe since the Nazis. He was indicted by the International War Crimes Tribunal in 2002, then allegedly sheltered by the Bosnian government for two years before finally turning himself in. An army colonel, he was convicted of personally supervising the beheading of up to 100 Muslims over a five-day killing frenzy, directing the digging of mass graves and flooding the area with spotlights so the killing could go on all night. THE LESSON
Mark 11:1-11 (NRSV)

When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.'” They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Absalom Jones and his friend Richard Allen led a walkout from their Philadelphia Methodist church when it tried to impose racial segregation one Sunday. They organized their own church, which eventually became St. Thomas’s African Episcopal Church, on the condition that Mr. Jones be licensed as a layreader and eventually ordained. Morning Prayer 13.2.17, Absalom Jones, 1st Black Episcopal Priest, 1818

The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

St. Thomas African Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, founded by Fr. Absalom Jones after he and his friend Richard Allen led followers in walking out of St. George’s Methodist Church one Sunday, when the White church tried to spring racial segregation on them. They established the Free African Society, a mutual aid association, built their own church and applied to the Episcopal diocese for membership. Bishop William White admitted the new church and ordained Absalom Jones, while Richard Allen decided to found his own denomination, the venerable African Methodist Episcopal Church. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, To Timothy, my loyal child in the faith:

Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I urge you, as I did when I was on my way to Macedonia, to remain in Ephesus so that you may instruct certain people not to teach any different doctrine, and not to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies that promote speculations rather than the divine training that is known by faith. But the aim of such instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith. Some people have deviated from these and turned to meaningless talk, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make assertions.

Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it legitimately. This means understanding that the law is laid down not for the innocent but for the lawless and disobedient, for the godless and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their father or mother, for murderers, fornicators, sodomites, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the foremost. But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Absalom Jones had to overcome one trial after another to get where he needed to be. He was born into slavery; sold to a Philadelphia store owner; studied with Quakers and learned to read the Bible; saved a “king’s ransom” to buy his wife’s way out of bondage, and then his own; and joined the church, called by God to be a leader of his people.
