On that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.

THE LESSONS
Zechariah 12:9-11; 13:1, 7-9 (NRSV)

And on that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

And I will pour out a spirit of compassion and supplication on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that, when they look on the one whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. On that day the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great as the mourning for Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo.

The blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he cured them. He left them, went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.

Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The raising of Lazarus, an icon from the 15th century, now at the Russian National Museum in St. Petersburg. Jesus was friends with this family of siblings, who recognized him as a holy rabbi and prophet. They fed and sheltered him, and their house was always open. When Lazarus died, Jesus deliberately waited a few days, then headed there to bestow a resurrection that prefigured his own. Imagine the love that was involved.

THE LESSON
John 11:1-27 (NRSV)

Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

Then after this Jesus said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going there again?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble, because they see the light of this world. But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them.” After saying this, he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him.” The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right.” Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was referring merely to sleep. Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. For your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.”

Tikhon was a priest’s son who entered seminary at age 13; his classmates nicknamed him “Patriarch,” which turned out to be apt. As an adult he became Bishop of Lublin, then Archbishop of Alaska, where he established many new churches throughout North America and enjoyed warm relations with the Episcopal Church and others. He became Patriarch of Moscow in 1917, endured the Russian Revolution, sold Church valuables to feed the poor during the resulting famine, was imprisoned for a year by the Soviets, and endured criticism from the left and the right. In 1989 the Russian Council of Bishops glorified him among the saints.

A visitation will be held on Easter Saturday between the Dioceses of South Dakota and Connecticut, as Sage Fast Dog and Mother Lauren R. Stanley of the Rosebud Episcopal Mission travel to New England to present a cultural program at the Pequot Library in Southport, co-sponsored by Trinity Church. Rosebud is one of our mission partners; Connecticut’s relationship with them goes back a long time.

These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.

Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place to share the rich root of the olive tree, do not boast over the branches. If you do boast, remember that it is not you that support the root, but the root that supports you. You will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand only through faith. So do not become proud, but stand in awe. For if God did not spare the natural branches, perhaps he will not spare you. Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness toward you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. And even those of Israel, if they do not persist in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. As Archbishop of Alaska and North America, Tikhon traveled widely in the United States and participated in many ecumenical events. In 1900 he sat on a bishop’s throne at the consecration of the Episcopal Bishop of Fond du Lac and would have helped in the laying-on-of-hands, but TEC’s House of Bishops said no; a photo of all the bishops in copes and miters was enough to cause a national scandal. He became Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia in 1917.

His mentor, Deaconess Emma Drant, started this church as well as one across the bay in Oakland, where many Chinese fled after the Great Earthquake of 1906. When Fr. Do you not know, brothers and sisters—for I am speaking to those who know the law —that the law is binding on a person only during that person’s lifetime? Thus a married woman is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives; but if her husband dies, she is discharged from the law concerning the husband. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man, she is not an adulteress.

In the same way, my friends, you have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God. While we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. But now we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us captive, so that we are slaves not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.

What then should we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet, if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” But sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died, and the very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

Charles Henry Brent, a rector’s son, was born in Newcastle, Ontario; his mother was descended from Loyalists who fled the American Revolution. He was educated at Trinity College, Toronto, but the only work he found was as a curate and organist in Buffalo, New York. He moved to Boston, came under the influence of the Cowley Fathers, spent ten years as curate in the underprivileged South End, then in 1901 was shocked to get a telegram naming him missionary Bishop of the Philippines, then governed by the United States. He stayed 15 years, establishing schools and hospitals before leaving to assume the senior chaplaincy with the Allied Expeditionary Force in World War I. He hated the war and devoted himself afterward to peace and ecumenical activities as Bishop of Western New York. (Brown Brothers)

The American Presiding Bishop Michael Curry completed the first of six planned “revivals” in the next two years with his first stop last weekend in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The 3-day series of events reported good crowds, multiracial and ecumenical leadership, youth events, four of the PB’s patented stemwinder sermons, music by the Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church choir and lots of Amens. “Episcopal Church, we need you to follow Jesus. We need you to be the countercultural people of God who would love one another, who would care when others could care less, who would give, not take,” he told the gathering at Calvary Church in the Shadyside neighborhood. He plans other revivals in the Dioceses of West Missouri, Georgia, San Joaquin, Honduras and a joint evangelism mission with the Church of England in 2018. (Photos and reportage by the Rev. THE LESSONS
Ecclesiasticus 39:1-10 (NRSV)

He seeks out the wisdom of all the ancients,  and is concerned with prophecies;  he preserves the sayings of the famous  and penetrates the subtleties of parables;  he seeks out the hidden meanings of proverbs  and is at home with the obscurities of parables.  He serves among the great  and appears before rulers;  he travels in foreign lands  and learns what is good and evil in the human lot.  He sets his heart to rise early  to seek the Lord who made him,  and to petition the Most High;  he opens his mouth in prayer  and asks pardon for his sins.

If the great Lord is willing,  he will be filled with the spirit of understanding;  he will pour forth words of wisdom of his own  and give thanks to the Lord in prayer.  The Lord will direct his counsel and knowledge,  as he meditates on his mysteries.  He will show the wisdom of what he has learned,  and will glory in the law of the Lord’s covenant.  Many will praise his understanding;  it will never be blotted out.  His memory will not disappear,  and his name will live through all generations.  Nations will speak of his wisdom,  and the congregation will proclaim his praise.

Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” He asked, “Who are you, Lord?” The reply came, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. For several days he was with the disciples in Damascus, and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is the Son of God.” All who heard him were amazed and said, “Is not this the man who made havoc in Jerusalem among those who invoked this name? And has he not come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?” Saul became increasingly more powerful and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Messiah.

Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how.”

Thomas Oommen, the Bishop of Madhya Kerala, was elected Moderator of the Church of South India at its 35th Synod in Kottayam, just a few months after celebrating his diocese’s 200th anniversary. “The boundaries of the denominations of the Christian Church must become thinner in order to proclaim Jesus in practice,” he said. He pledged to continue to “take up the cause of ecological concerns, of the rights of dalits and adivasis and the need for gender equality. We will continue to oppose injustice, particularly where it concerns the rights of Dalit Christians.” The church was formed in 1947, the year of Indian independence, as a merger of several Protestant denominations while retaining episcopal order and polity. He will serve half-time in his own diocese and half at CSI headquarters in Chennai. (Church of South India)

THE PRAYERS

The Abbot Wolfstan became Bishop of Worcester four years prior to William the Conqueror’s invasion of England, and overcame the new king’s disdain when he professed obedience on canonical grounds to the new Archbishop of Canterbury Lanfranc. Wulfstan kept his see, lived another 30 years and presided over the transition from an Anglo-Saxon church to an Anglo-French one.
