Whoever knows God listens to us, and whoever is not from God does not listen to us. From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

A very large crowd marched on Washington, D.C. Saturday, protesting U.S. government policy on climate change. It was the 100th day of Donald Trump’s presidency, amid record-setting heat. The most popular signs said “There is no Planet B.” (Washington Post)

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.

and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” He said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Doctor, cure yourself!’ And you will say, ‘Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.'” And he said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. Pope Francis of Rome made a quick trip to Egypt last week, hoping to protect and strengthen the Coptic community and reaching out to Muslim leaders to encourage religious tolerance and peace. He’s seen above with Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II at an outdoor Mass at a soccer stadium, a relatively small crowd for Francis. Tensions have been high after the most recent bombings of Coptic churches, which killed scores and injured over 100. About 10% of Egypt’s population of 90 million is Coptic, of whom 1% follow Francis and 99% follow Tawadros. (L’Osservatore Romano)

O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Collect for the Renewal of Life

O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our heart to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness during the day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Evening Prayer 29.4.17, Catherine of Siena, 1380

Jesus answered the devil, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'”

The Keystone XL oil pipeline – which drew fierce protests from the Standing Rock Lakotas – is not the only proposed development project to face opposition from American Indian neighbors; the Ramapough of New Jersey are fighting a similar proposal, worrying about a big spill ruining the drinking water on their historic lands, and desecration of ancient religious sites. This man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead.

A few days ago we mentioned a housing project for the poor in East Chicago, Indiana that was built on the site of an old smelter that contaminated the ground with lead, arsenic and other toxic chemicals; yesterday the new head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency visited the area “to talk to residents.” He held a news conference that lasted two minutes, took no questions and refused to meet with those affected. The city has finally decided the complex must be bulldozed and residents relocated, but it has no place to send them except the high-crime south suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. Pruitt is an opponent of his own agency’s mission, and the result was a public donnybrook. Thousands of Black and Latino residents are affected, of whom 40% are children. The new pastor of a Roman Catholic parish in Battery Park City, Manhattan, New York, facing a daunting financial deficit, is moving to close St. Joseph’s Chapel despite its role as a shelter and staging area for first responders after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. As the area rebuilt, the historic chapel was razed and relocated – to the ground floor of a new luxury apartment building at a rent of $264,000 a year. She said to the people, “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?” They left the city and were on their way to him.

Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Surely no one has brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. Do you not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

We chose this work by Rembrandt called Jesus Driving the Merchants from the Temple to illustrate the following, entirely different story because of what they have in common, Jesus criticizing societal norms in a fairly extreme fashion. In the Temple he lashed out at a corrupt religious practice; in the following speech he aims his verbal fire at individuals. Today’s Christians tend to cheer the first story and cringe at the second – both reactions he may have had in mind. Collectively it’s our turn to be rebuked.

Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. St. Polycarp learned about Jesus from St. John the Evangelist, who taught him and made him Bishop of Smyrna in present-day Turkey. Therefore we would expect that any extant writing by Polycarp would be as faithful to the Gospel as it’s possible to get from someone who didn’t know Jesus directly. And we have such a fragment, a Letter to the Philippians, as documented by St. Irenaeus (d. 202), who was born in Smyrna and became Polycarp’s disciple. Pope Francis all but endorsed the Standing Rock protests yesterday in Rome during a meeting with Indigenous members of the International Fund for Agricultural Development. He did not mention the North Dakota protest by name, but said, “In this regard, the right to prior and informed consent (of native peoples) should always prevail,” citing the 1997 U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Trump Administration has reversed U.S. policy on completing a massive oil pipeline on former tribal lands just a mile from the current reservation boundary. (Osservatore Romano)

Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will renounce the faith by paying attention to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared with a hot iron. They forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, provided it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by God’s word and by prayer.

If you put these instructions before the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with profane myths and old wives’ tales. Train yourself in godliness, for, while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and struggle, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

These are the things you must insist on and teach. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Until I arrive, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. Put these things into practice, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Charles Quintard, an opponent of racism and classism, was the first new Episcopal Bishop after the Civil War, and his election in 1867 spurred reconciliation between the Northern and Southern factions. There was never a formal split between the two, such as happened in Protestant denominations; though a Confederate Episcopal Church was announced and did publish a Prayer Book, it was only a reprint of the Standard Book with a new cover page. The Southern Church never met in convention, while the Northern Church continued to meet; each time the clerk would call the roll, mark the Southern dioceses absent, and everyone pretended the Southerners meant to come but just couldn’t make it. The war finally ended and Tennessee elected Quintard, a physician and Union man who had served as surgeon and chaplain of the Confederate 1st Tennessee Regiment, just a month before the General Convention of 1867, throwing his “consents” to that body. They voted him in, the clerk announced that all dioceses were present and accounted for, and The Episcopal Church was reunited.

Acolytes were commissioned on Sunday at Grace Church, Brunswick, Maryland, by the rector, the Rev. Anjel Scarborough, with Senior Warden Al Horton keeping an eye on them. We know their names – Jordan, Christina, Miriam, Millie and Gabriel, and we can see four of them – but Miriam, who isn’t very tall yet, is hidden by the crucifer in the foreground. St. Brigid, also called Bride, is Ireland’s most popular saint; she may have known St. Patrick. She established a monastery at Kildare and persuaded Conlaed to bring his monks and join her. She is often depicted with a crozier or shepherd’s hook, a sign of episcopal office. We don’t know whether she was ordained a bishop, but we do know she possessed equal authority. A swastika was painted on the sign at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati over New Year’s, sending shudders throughout the city; this is the flagship institution of Reform Judaism in the United States, the largest denomination in the country, and a source of great local pride. THE LESSONS
Exodus 3:1-12 (NRSV)

Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. Then Moses said, “I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up.” When the LORD saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” He said further, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

Then the LORD said, “I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the country of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. The cry of the Israelites has now come to me; I have also seen how the Egyptians oppress them. Hebrews 11:23-31 (NRSV)

By faith Moses was hidden by his parents for three months after his birth, because they saw that the child was beautiful; and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called a son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered abuse suffered for the Christ to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to the reward. By faith he left Egypt, unafraid of the king’s anger; for he persevered as though he saw him who is invisible. By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.

By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as if it were dry land, but when the Egyptians attempted to do so they were drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho fell after they had been encircled for seven days. By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had received the spies in peace.

Elizabeth Seton, a devoted Episcopalian, discovered the Roman Catholic Church during a visit to Italy, where she and her husband had gone in hopes of easing his tuberculosis. But he died and she found comfort from the priests there. She returned to the U.S. and in 1809 founded the Sisters of Charity, the first convent in the U.S. She was canonized in 1975, the first U.S.-born saint. (iconographer unknown)
