When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.

The Rev. Kelsey Hutto, priest-in-charge, Episcopal Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, and Curry’s assistant the Rev. Michael Hunn at St. David’s in tiny Bean Blossom, Indiana, where Curry celebrated and preached on Sunday to support the congregation, which suffered Election Night vandalism six months ago with spray-painted slogans like “Heil Trump” and “Fag Church.” Yesterday police arrested the church organist, a doctoral student in music at nearby Indiana University, and charged him with the crime. He reportedly hoped to spur a popular uprising against the election results, but was surprised by national news coverage; another Episcopal church near Washington, D.C. was also vandalized the same night. I have heard of you that a spirit of the gods is in you, and that enlightenment, understanding, and excellent wisdom are found in you. Now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me to read this writing and tell me its interpretation, but they were not able to give the interpretation of the matter. But I have heard that you can give interpretations and solve problems. Now if you are able to read the writing and tell me its interpretation, you shall be clothed in purple, have a chain of gold around your neck, and rank third in the kingdom.”

Then Daniel answered in the presence of the king, “Let your gifts be for yourself, or give your rewards to someone else! Nevertheless I will read the writing to the king and let him know the interpretation. O king, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar kingship, greatness, glory, and majesty. And because of the greatness that he gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. He killed those he wanted to kill, kept alive those he wanted to keep alive, honored those he wanted to honor, and degraded those he wanted to degrade. Then Belshazzar gave the command, and Daniel was clothed in purple, a chain of gold was put around his neck, and a proclamation was made concerning him that he should rank third in the kingdom.

That very night Belshazzar, the Chaldean king, was killed. And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.

Jusepe Leonardo, c. 1630: St. Mark. His Gospel is the oldest of the four, and scholars say Matthew, Luke and John borrowed heavily from it. Mark omits the birth of Jesus and plunges right in with the ministry of John the Baptist. It’s notable for structuring the miracles of Christ in a numerical scheme, and its brisk pace; everything happens “straightaway” (KJV) or “immediately.”

Evening Prayer 20.4.17, Easter Thursday

You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name.

They call it Friday School at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at Purdue University in Indiana, where the campus minister meets over lunch and chat with students at the nearby high school every week. The chapel’s just a block away from both schools, which makes it very convenient, but it’s the only campus ministry we know of that serves both age groups. Our vicar is an alumnus of both schools. Sotirios Panalidis: St. Peter. In today’s lesson, which takes place just days after Christ’s resurrection, Peter addresses an excited crowd – and risks his own life – with amazing boldness and clarity. There’s a reason Jesus picked him to lead his Church.

Acts 3:11-26 (NRSV)

While (the lame beggar) clung to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s Portico, utterly astonished. When Peter saw it, he addressed the people, “You Israelites, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate, though he had decided to release him. But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you, and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And by faith in his name, his name itself has made this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you.

“And now, friends, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. In this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, that his Messiah would suffer. Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah appointed for you, that is, Jesus, who must remain in heaven until the time of universal restoration that God announced long ago through his holy prophets. Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you from your own people a prophet like me. You must listen to whatever he tells you. And it will be that everyone who does not listen to that prophet will be utterly rooted out of the people.’ And all the prophets, as many as have spoken, from Samuel and those after him, also predicted these days. You are the descendants of the prophets and of the covenant that God gave to your ancestors, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your descendants all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you, to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Collect of the Day: Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday

Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. The General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks

Chip Marble, VIII Bishop of Mississippi and later an assistant bishop under Michael Curry in the Diocese of North Carolina. Bishop Marble is credited with reviving the vocational diaconate in Mississippi.

Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. Richard Upjohn designed the Church of the Holy Communion in New York City with and for William A. Muhlenberg, as well as a Sisters’ House next door for Anne Ayres, CHC. The parish thrived for a century or more, but by 1975 the neighborhood was no longer residential and the church merged with two others nearby. The raising of Lazarus, an icon from the 15th century, now at the Russian National Museum in St. Petersburg. Jesus was friends with this family of siblings, who recognized him as a holy rabbi and prophet. They fed and sheltered him, and their house was always open. When Lazarus died, Jesus deliberately waited a few days, then headed there to bestow a resurrection that prefigured his own. Imagine the love that was involved.

THE LESSON
John 11:1-27 (NRSV)

Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

Then after this Jesus said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going there again?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble, because they see the light of this world. But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them.” After saying this, he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him.” The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right.” Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was referring merely to sleep. Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. For your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.”

Tikhon was a priest’s son who entered seminary at age 13; his classmates nicknamed him “Patriarch,” which turned out to be apt. As an adult he became Bishop of Lublin, then Archbishop of Alaska, where he established many new churches throughout North America and enjoyed warm relations with the Episcopal Church and others. He became Patriarch of Moscow in 1917, endured the Russian Revolution, sold Church valuables to feed the poor during the resulting famine, was imprisoned for a year by the Soviets, and endured criticism from the left and the right. In 1989 the Russian Council of Bishops glorified him among the saints.
