Evening Prayer 11.4.17, Tuesday in Holy Week

Jesus said, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

Children being evacuated from North Park Elementary School yesterday in San Bernardino, California, where a middle-aged man with a grievance and a gun shot his wife to death, plus a random 8-year-old, before taking his own life. It’s become routine when schools are locked down because of emergencies to march children out like this, but no child should ever have to endure such a thing; a minority of Americans value their gun rights more than children’s right to safety. (KTLA-TV)

Rend your hearts, and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, who is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil. Joel 2:13

GENERAL CONFESSION

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,

Archbishop Romero is the most famous of the 70,000 Salvadoran Martyrs, but many other clergy, religious and lay ministers were also slain, including Maryknoll Sisters Ita Ford and Maura Clarke, Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel and lay minister Jean Donovan, who were raped, killed by the side of the road and buried in a shallow grave in 1980. THE LESSON
John 8:33-47 (NRSV)

The Pharisees answered Jesus, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?”

Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you look for an opportunity to kill me, because there is no place in you for my word. I declare what I have seen in the Father’s presence; as for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father.”

They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing what Abraham did, but now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. You are indeed doing what your father does.” They said to him, “We are not illegitimate children; we have one father, God himself.” Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now I am here. I did not come on my own, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot accept my word. Victory at Malheur: Four men were convicted Friday in the armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon a year ago, including Duane Ehmer, above, striking a heroic pose as some kind of freedom fighter for the cameras. The government earlier failed to convict the ringleaders, so this trial was a consolation prize of sorts. Most important, it reestablishes the rule of law in that part of Oregon, where we have members; the conspirators’ real crime was terrorizing a town, a county and the whole area they chose to attack. Simon Dewey: Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well. It’s a lesson about the righteousness of women, the inclusion of outcasts and the universal Good News.

They were astonished that Jesus was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or “Why are you speaking with her?” Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?” They left the city and were on their way to him.

Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Surely no one has brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. Do you not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

In the runup to the U.S. Civil War, racist apologists for slavery claimed that Blacks were incapable of governing themselves: too stupid, animalistic and uncivilized. Here is James Theodore Holly’s learned refutation of that outrageous claim, published four years before he led a group of New Englanders who resettled in independent Haiti. He became the first Black bishop of The Episcopal Church in 1874, with jurisdiction extended to the Dominican Republic in 1897. “Ungovernable”? He established the biggest diocese in The Episcopal Church – bigger than William White’s Pennsylvania; bigger than John Henry Hobart’s New York; bigger than anything White Americans built with a 300-year head start. Those dioceses were extensively subdivided, of course, but they still do not rival Haiti in the affections of the people – nor in the mainland’s affection for them. U.S. Episcopalians come to Haiti from everywhere; some dioceses have taken on special responsibilities to assist with mission. The Church there is both weak and strong, and we reverence you, Bishop Holly, one of our greatest missionary bishops.

Archbishop Luwum with the infamous Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, who had him gunned down for protesting government-sanctioned rape and murder. Uganda is the most Christian country in Africa, and Anglican archbishops are influential public figures valued by the government as long as they don’t cause trouble. Luwum told the truth about Amin, so the dictator eliminated him.

From there Jesus set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? Who has directed the spirit of the LORD, or as his counselor has instructed him? Whom did he consult for his enlightenment, and who taught him the path of justice? Who taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding? Even the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as dust on the scales; see, he takes up the isles like fine dust. Lebanon would not provide fuel enough, nor are its animals enough for a burnt offering. All the nations are as nothing before him; they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness.

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,

“See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way;
the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:

make his paths straight.'”

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

Julia Chester Emery’s best-known legacy is the United Thank Offering, a fundraising ministry of the Episcopal Church Women, which has raised hundreds of millions of dollars to build churches and support mission work all over the world. Above from 2013 on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation: Michael Smith, the Bishop of South Dakota, wearing the feathers of a Sioux chief, presided over the consecration of the new St. James’s, Cannon Ball, North Dakota, as supervising priest John Floberg held up a famous UTO blue box. For 40 years Emery presided over the Woman’s Auxiliary (now ECW) of the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society, the formal name of The Episcopal Church. (St. James’s lost its old building to a teenage arsonist three years earlier, but those blue boxes full of thanksgiving coins helped rebuild it better than ever.) Had she been alive last year when the oil pipeline confrontation broke out at Standing Rock, few would have been surprised to see her there, praying and encouraging the women, eating the Native food, sleeping on the ground in a tipi – and bringing funds to help. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name.

We are praying fervently today that no violence will occur at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota, where hundreds of Native American tribe members, now joined by hundreds of U.S. military veterans, are trying to block the completion of a big oil pipeline under the giant Missouri River, the tribe’s only water source. The main conflict now is less with the government or the pipeline company than with the county sheriff, whose officers are armed to the teeth and itching for a fight. Missionary priests from the area representing the highest levels of the Episcopal Church, including our own Mother Lauren Stanley, are on hand as chaplains to the protesters to try to de-escalate police violence. Above, the scene two weeks ago, where all the firepower was in the hands of the police, who injured and arrested hundreds. Friday night the Obama Administration sent in Federal mediators to try to cool things off, but the sheriff is publicly defiant. And now bless the God of all,
who everywhere works great wonders,
who fosters our growth from birth,
and deals with us according to his mercy.

Police and soldiers from the National Guard advancing on a prayer circle at Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota last week, where thousands of protesters have camped out for months trying to prevent construction of an oil pipeline across land that once was theirs, until the U.S. government broke a treaty and stole it back. The land is now owned by the pipeline company and runs through ancient burial grounds right next to the current reservation; besides disturbing the ancients, they fear the pipeline will break and contaminate their only source of drinking water, the Missouri River. The power struggle is growing more violent; 140 people were arrested. The Episcopal Church, which has historic churches among the Standing Rock Lakotas, is solidly behind relocating the pipeline and respecting the sacred land. (Mike McCleary/Bismarck Tribune)

The leader of his brothers and the pride of his people
was the high priest, Simon son of Onias,
who in his life repaired the house,

and clothed himself in perfect splendor,
when he went up to the holy altar,
he made the court of the sanctuary glorious.

When he received the portions from the hands of the priests,
as he stood by the hearth of the altar
with a garland of brothers around him,

All the sons of Aaron in their splendor
