There was considerable complaining about Jesus among the crowds. While some were saying, “He is a good man,” others were saying, “No, he is deceiving the crowd.” Yet no one would speak openly about him for fear of the Jews.

Morning Prayer 14.3.17, Tuesday in the 2nd Week of Lent

Ever since the creation of the world God’s eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made.

Rend your hearts, and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, who is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil. Joel 2:13

CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. Thus says the LORD:

What wrong did your ancestors find in me
that they went far from me,
and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves?

Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

James T. Holly, the first African-American bishop in the Episcopal Church, was especially attracted to Haiti because of its successful slave revolt against the French in 1803, causing Napoleon to abandon his dreams of a French empire in the New World – and to sell the giant Louisiana Territory to the United States. Victory at Malheur: Four men were convicted Friday in the armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon a year ago, including Duane Ehmer, above, striking a heroic pose as some kind of freedom fighter for the cameras. Simon Dewey: Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well. It’s a lesson about the righteousness of women, the inclusion of outcasts and the universal Good News.

They were astonished that Jesus was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or “Why are you speaking with her?” Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?” They left the city and were on their way to him.

Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Surely no one has brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. Do you not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

In the runup to the U.S. Civil War, racist apologists for slavery claimed that Blacks were incapable of governing themselves: too stupid, animalistic and uncivilized. Here is James Theodore Holly’s learned refutation of that outrageous claim, published four years before he led a group of New Englanders who resettled in independent Haiti. He became the first Black bishop of The Episcopal Church in 1874, with jurisdiction extended to the Dominican Republic in 1897. “Ungovernable”? He established the biggest diocese in The Episcopal Church – bigger than William White’s Pennsylvania; bigger than John Henry Hobart’s New York; bigger than anything White Americans built with a 300-year head start. Those dioceses were extensively subdivided, of course, but they still do not rival Haiti in the affections of the people – nor in the mainland’s affection for them. U.S. Episcopalians come to Haiti from everywhere; some dioceses have taken on special responsibilities to assist with mission. The Church there is both weak and strong, and we reverence you, Bishop Holly, one of our greatest missionary bishops.

Morning Prayer 8.1.17, 1st Sunday after the Epiphany: Baptism of Our Lord

He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
he will gather the lambs in his arms,
and carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead the mother sheep.

This event signals the importance of baptism, so central an act in our faith that Christ himself blessed and participated in it with the help of his cousin John. The washing is a liturgical or ritual act meant to signify a change of life. Jesus didn’t need the washing; he was telling us that we do.

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

For to which of the angels did God ever say,
“You are my Son;
today I have begotten you”?

Some Christians insist thst baptism isn’t essential to salvation; they like to cite St. Paul’s insistence on faith alone, without acknowledging the question he was answering when he wrote it. Occasionally, people who claim that baptism is optional admit that they like Paul’s teachings better than those of Jesus – to which we say, Let Paul save them. (artist unknown)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.

This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.”

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! New nurses graduated last month from FSIL, the Faculty of Nursing Science of the Episcopal University of Haiti. As our websites prepare for the new budget year, we are gathering information about this program as a possible mission partner. It seems to be very similar to the Martha Kelley Scholarship we sponsor at Cuttington University School of Nursing in Liberia; one way we can help improve public health in poor nations is by educating nurses, each one of whom may touch the lives of thousands in his or her career. St. Simon and St. Jude; Jude is one of the patron saints of the Armenian Apostolic Church as the first to bring the Gospel to that country. Very little is known of Simon the Zealot, but it’s assumed he was an evangelist in various places around the Mediterranean, and at least three locations claim he was martyred there. The LORD has bared his holy arm

We have finally received word from our mission partners at St. André’s Church and School in Mithon, Haiti after Hurricane Matthew struck: no deaths, but a lot of damage to church, school, homes, crops and the town well built by the Diocese of Indianapolis. Food and water are running low, but we’re not hearing about cholera in the immediate area, so that is a relief. We’re not told what this building is, but we assume it’s church property, perhaps the church itself. (Fr. Jean Michelin)

As if Rendel, Haiti didn’t have enough to deal with, deadly cholera has combined with Hurricane Matthew to wipe out 90% of the town of 25,000. Most survivors have fled, but those escaping have to cross this contaiminated river multiple times; the only community leaders left are the Roman Catholic priest and a few nurses who run a clinic that’s fast running out of supplies. THE LESSON
Luke 9:37-50 (NRSV)

On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met Jesus. Just then a man from the crowd shouted, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son; he is my only child. Suddenly a spirit seizes him, and all at once he shrieks. It convulses him until he foams at the mouth; it mauls him and will scarcely leave him. I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” Jesus answered, “You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” While he was coming, the demon dashed him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. And all were astounded at the greatness of God.

While everyone was amazed at all that he was doing, he said to his disciples, “Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands.” But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was concealed from them, so that they could not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

An argument arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest. But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side, and said to them, “Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.”

John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you.”

Gian Lorenzo Bernini: The Ecstasy of St. Teresa. She is famous as a mystic who received fantastic visions, but there’s more to her than that; she was a missionary and administrator who founded 17 convents of Reformed or “discalced” (barefoot) Carmelites, whose ascetic piety provided the framework she felt was necessary to enable the sisters to develop true faith.
