She has two doctorates and is a former professor of organic chemistry, as well as a former firefighter and emergency medical technician. The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!” Jesus said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. A new report on the U.S. Indian Health Service is out, with results that won’t shock anyone paying attention: America’s indigenous peoples have some terrible health outcomes because the clinics are dilapidated, underfunded and understaffed – and have been that way for decades. The facilities are small and located (with the reservations themselves) far from urban areas where specialists see patients. The average lifespan is five years shorter than for white Americans; Natives are five times more likely to die of alcohol-related conditions, 4.5 times more likely to die of tuberculosis, twice as likely to be killed in a car crash, 86% more likely to be homicide victims and 60% more likely to kill themselves. The Obama Administration has increased funding by over 50% since 2008, but it will take years to overcome the maintenance backlog alone. Henry Martyn was an Englishman from Cornwall, educated at St. John’s College, Cambridge, who became a priest and missionary after meeting evangelical leader Charles Simeon. Martyn became a chaplain to the East India Company, traveled to India and threw himself into translating the Scriptures and Prayer Book into Hindi and Persian; he also preached for five years and had learned discussions with Muslim scholars. When he died of the plague in Armenia at 31, the Armenians recognized his greatness and buried him with the honors of a bishop.

Pharaoh’s magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, but they could not. There were gnats on both humans and animals. And the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God!”

Donald Trump held a campaign rally at Hickory, North Carolina on Monday and was met with protesters as usual – topics of no interest to us until now, because of where the rally was held: Lenoir-Rhyne University, which is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, the closest ecumenical partner of The Episcopal Church. Two developments have drawn our notice since then: the Episcopal House of Bishops released a unanimous statement Tuesday decrying the current U.S. political climate. The timing is coincidental, but the statement reads, “In a country still living under the shadow of the lynching tree, we are troubled by the violent forces being released by this season’s political rhetoric. Americans are turning against their neighbors, particularly those on the margins of society. There is legitimate reason to fear where this rhetoric and the actions arising from it might take us. We reject the idolatrous notion that we can ensure the safety of some by sacrificing the hopes of others. No matter where we fall on the political spectrum, we must respect the dignity of every human being and we must seek the common good above all else. We call for prayer for our country that a spirit of reconciliation will prevail and we will not betray our true selves.” The second development was aimed directly at the ELCA and Lenoir-Rhyne: a big online activist group called Faithful America, organized by the National Council of Churches in 2004 as a religious version of MoveOn, has released a petition condemning the candidate, the rally, the location – and the ELCA Presiding Bishop’s comment, “We don’t cut off debate.” Through it all, Trump carried North Carolina in the primary election and appears close to locking up the Republican nomination for president. Now if the ministry of death, chiseled in letters on stone tablets, came in glory so that the people of Israel could not gaze at Moses’ face because of the glory of his face, a glory now set aside, how much more will the ministry of the Spirit come in glory? For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, much more does the ministry of justification abound in glory! Indeed, what once had glory has lost its glory because of the greater glory; for if what was set aside came through glory, much more has the permanent come in glory!

Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.

Patrick was born in Great Britain, the son of a deacon and grandson of a priest. At age 16 he was carried off by Irish slave-traders and forced to work as a shepherd. He escaped five years later, returned to Britain and received Holy Orders. Kenneth D. Taylor has died, the Canadian ambassador to Iran during the American hostage crisis in 1979-81, who famously helped shelter six Americans who escaped the U.S. Embassy, only to be turned out by the British. Taylor, his wife Pat and Canadian immigration officer John Sheardown hid the Americans in their homes until they were able to sneak out of the country by posing as members of a Canadian film crew supposedly shooting a science fiction movie called “Argo.” Hailed as a hero in both Canada and the United States, Taylor was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1981. Thirty years later actor-director Ben Affleck made an actual film of the incident called “Argo,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2012. (Associated Press)

Alvin P. Adams has died, the American ambassador to Haiti who paved the way for the democratic election of Fr. Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1990 after decades of dictatorship. “Papa Doc” Duvalier ruled Haiti with an iron fist and his secret police known as Tontons Macoute; when the old man finally died, his son “Baby Doc” succeeded him, but was driven out 15 years later by a popular uprising. The Haitian military took over, the AIDS epidemic destroyed tourism, and Adams, who spoke Haitian Creole, persuaded the military ruler to board a U.S. jet and leave the country. Aristide and his liberation theology didn’t last a year before he was overthrown by a military coup, but more U.S. intervention enabled him to return in 1994, finish out his term and preside over the first transition between democratically elected presidents in Haitian history. CONFESSION OF SIN

Peter Kassig, center, grew up in Indianapolis watching his grandfather, right, a Methodist minister, become a leading advocate in the city for peace and mutual respect among the world’s religions, with a particular concern for Palestinians and other Muslims in the Middle East. When civil war broke out in Syria two years ago, the young man felt called to go there and help the people however he could. In time he converted to Islam and took the name Abdul-Rahman; he is now a captive of ISIS, which threatens to behead him. His friends recently held a public assembly ro praise his sincerity and idealism, while his parents have preferred to stay silent and work back channels among Syrian Muslims, in hopes of persuading ISIS to let him go. The U.S. Government has finally decided to award Lt. Alonzo H. Cushing the nation’s highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, 151 years after he showed incredible heroism in the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Though severely wounded defending the Union position on Cemetery Hill against Pickett’s Charge, he refused to leave the front; finally a sergeant had to hoist him up and relay his orders to be heard over the battle. A third shot finally proved mortal, at least to his physical body. (Wisconsin Historical Society)

Fear God and give him glory, for the hour of his judgment has come.

Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, protesting ISIS last Wednesday in central London with Jewish, Muslim and other faith leaders. Two nights ago we showed a video of him with Middle Eastern church leaders that morning, calling for prayers for Christians and other religious minorities in Iraq and throughout the region.

Thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, “I dwell in the high and holy place and also with the one who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite.” Isaiah 57:15

THE LESSONS
2 Kings 25:8-12, 22-26 (NRSV)

In the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month – which was the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon – Nebuzaradan, the captain of the bodyguard, a servant of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. He burned the house of the LORD, the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem; every great house he burned down. All the army of the Chaldeans who were with the captain of the guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem. Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried into exile the rest of the people who were left in the city and the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon – all the rest of the population. But the captain of the guard left some of the poorest people of the land to be vinedressers and tillers of the soil.

He appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan as governor over the people who remained in the land of Judah, whom King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had left. Now when all the captains of the forces and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah as governor, they came with their men to Gedaliah at Mizpah, namely, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite. Gedaliah swore to them and their men, saying, “Do not be afraid because of the Chaldean officials; live in the land, serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.” But in the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah son of Elishama, of the royal family, came with ten men; they struck down Gedaliah so that he died, along with the Judeans and Chaldeans who were with him at Mizpah. Then all the people, high and low and the captains of the forces set out and went to Egypt; for they were afraid of the Chaldeans.

1 Corinthians 15:12-29 (NRSV)

Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ – whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have died in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “All things are put in subjection,” it is plain that this does not include the one who put all things in subjection under him. When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to the one who put all things in subjection under him, so that God may be all in all.

Otherwise, what will those people do who receive baptism on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?

Henry Martyn translated the Scriptures and Prayer Book into Hindi and Persian, preached for five years and had learned discussions with Muslim scholars. When he died in Armenia at 31, the people recognized his greatness and buried him with the honors of a bishop.
