When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.

The Rev. Kelsey Hutto, priest-in-charge, Episcopal Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, and Curry’s assistant the Rev. Michael Hunn at St. David’s in tiny Bean Blossom, Indiana, where Curry celebrated and preached on Sunday to support the congregation, which suffered Election Night vandalism six months ago with spray-painted slogans like “Heil Trump” and “Fag Church.” Yesterday police arrested the church organist, a doctoral student in music at nearby Indiana University, and charged him with the crime. He reportedly hoped to spur a popular uprising against the election results, but was surprised by national news coverage; another Episcopal church near Washington, D.C. was also vandalized the same night. Three days after he played for the Presiding Bishop, the organist was jailed on a misdemeanor charge; we ask your prayers for him. (screen shot from diocesan video)

Luke 5:1-11 (NRSV)

Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us, but if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9

God of all mercy,

THE LESSON
John 10:1-18 (NRSV)

Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.” Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. Pandita Mary Ramabai faced huge barriers as an Indian woman, but she was sustained by two things: her scholarly father taught her Sanskrit and the Hindu classics, and she met strong, faithful women in London who became her role models in evangelism and social work.

But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him?

Cadbury Cancels Easter: The British national Easter egg hunt, sponsored by the National Trust, sold naming rights years ago to a candymaker, which decided that it might sell more cheap chocolate bunnies this year if it got rid of Easter altogether. The move has been denounced by the prime minister and archbishops of Canterbury and York, as well as calls for a boycott, but maybe the National Trust should have thought of this earlier. Pandita Ramabai, discriminated against like other Indian women for being female from childhood on, was denied an education but managed to learn anyway. After traveling to England and working with Anglican nuns, she became a Christian, returned to India and founded a mission in Mumbai for abandoned widows and orphans, at first of the high Brahmin class and later without distinctions. She also translated the Bible into Marathi, a West Indian language. The title “Pandita” bestowed on her means, ironically, “the learned one.”

Archbishop Romero is the most famous of the 70,000 Salvadoran Martyrs, but many other clergy, religious and lay ministers were also slain, including Maryknoll Sisters Ita Ford and Maura Clarke, Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel and lay minister Jean Donovan, who were raped, killed by the side of the road and buried in a shallow grave in 1980. The Pharisees answered Jesus, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?”

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Abraham Lincoln, America’s greatest president, had a fraught relationship with the abolitionist Frederick Douglass, whose support was always tentative and conditional while his criticism was vehement and fierce – at least until Lincoln was able to issue the Emancipation Proclamation and make it stick. Then they developed a deep mutual respect, and finally met.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:2

They say the name makes people smile every time it comes up, which makes it easier to talk about a woman's practical needs and to offer support. Archbishop Luwum with the infamous Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, who had him gunned down for protesting government-sanctioned rape and murder. Uganda is the most Christian country in Africa, and Anglican archbishops are influential public figures valued by the government as long as they don’t cause trouble. Luwum told the truth about Amin, so the dictator eliminated him.

THE PRAYERS

Trinity Church, Kirksville, Missouri held a Parish Night Out Friday evening at a restaurant called the Take Root Café, a nonprofit eatery where payment is voluntary and college students eat free. City residents have been so generous in their overpayments that the café can afford to give away several hundred meals, so no one needs to go hungry. The parish’s newly ordained Deacon (and our Missioner) Maria L. Evans is now holding office hours there at lunchtime one day a week for anyone who wants to talk. (parish photo)

Acolytes were commissioned on Sunday at Grace Church, Brunswick, Maryland, by the rector, the Rev. Anjel Scarborough, with Senior Warden Al Horton keeping an eye on them. We know their names – Jordan, Christina, Miriam, Millie and Gabriel, and we can see four of them – but Miriam, who isn’t very tall yet, is hidden by the crucifer in the foreground. St. Brigid, also called Bride, is Ireland’s most popular saint; she may have known St. Patrick. She established a monastery at Kildare and persuaded Conlaed to bring his monks and join her. She is often depicted with a crozier or shepherd’s hook, a sign of episcopal office. We don’t know whether she was ordained a bishop, but we do know she possessed equal authority. Mark 8:1-10 (NRSV)

In those days when there was again a great crowd without anything to eat, he called his disciples and said to them, “I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way—and some of them have come from a great distance.” His disciples replied, “How can one feed these people with bread here in the desert?” He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” Then he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground; and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them to the crowd. They had also a few small fish; and after blessing them, he ordered that these too should be distributed. They ate and were filled; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. Now there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away. And immediately he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.

Fr. Bosco had a remarkable ministry among children in 19th century Italy. He started as a chaplain at a school for rich little girls, but soon added ragamuffin boys every Sunday - and got fired. He opened an orphanage and founded the Order of St. Francis de Sales, which grew to include women religious, lay brothers and dedicated laypeople.

Fr. Juan Bosco had a remarkable gift for ministry among children in 19th century Italy; he entertained as much as he taught, but he made the learning fun. He started out as a chaplain at a school for rich little girls, but soon added ragamuffin boys every Sunday – and got fired. He opened an orphanage and founded the Order of St. Francis de Sales, which includes women religious, lay brothers and dedicated laypeople. The Rev. Bosco Peters, well-known Anglican liturgist of New Zealand, is named for Fr. Juan; they even look a lot alike.
