THE LESSONS
Daniel 3:19-30 (NRSV)

Then Nebuchadnezzar was so filled with rage against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego that his face was distorted. He ordered the furnace heated up seven times more than was customary, and ordered some of the strongest guards in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and to throw them into the furnace of blazing fire. So the men were bound, still wearing their tunics, their trousers, their hats, and their other garments, and they were thrown into the furnace of blazing fire. Because the king’s command was urgent and the furnace was so overheated, the raging flames killed the men who lifted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. But the three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down, bound, into the furnace of blazing fire.

Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and rose up quickly. He said to his counselors, “Was it not three men that we threw bound into the fire?” They answered the king, “True, O king.” He replied, “But I see four men unbound, walking in the middle of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the fourth has the appearance of a god.” Nebuchadnezzar then approached the door of the furnace of blazing fire and said, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!” So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out from the fire. And the satraps, the prefects, the governors, and the king’s counselors gathered together and saw that the fire had not had any power over the bodies of those men; the hair of their heads was not singed, their tunics were not harmed, and not even the smell of fire came from them. Pompeo Batoni, 1743: The Ecstasy of St. Catherine of Siena. She was a Dominican nun and theologian – author of 400 letters still in existence – who received her first mystical vision at age six. In time she reportedly levitated, much to the consternation of the other nuns present, who couldn’t understand that this showing wasn’t meant to glorify her, but to teach them – and us.

Everlasting God, you so kindled the flame of holy love in the heart of blessed Catherine of Siena, as she meditated on the passion of your Son our Savior, that she devoted her life to the poor and the sick, and to the peace and unity of the Church: Grant that we also may share in the mystery of Christ’s death, and rejoice in the revelation of his glory, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. The Rev. Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows is to be consecrated the XI Bishop of Indianapolis in a few hours. She is a graduate of Smith College, Cornell University and the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, with degrees in architecture and historic preservation. She will be consecrated at Clowes Hall of Butler University; Friday the mayor of Indianapolis called on her at Trinity Church to welcome her to the city, and Friday night the Episcopal News Service had this headline as its lead story: “Episcopal Church Ready to Make History with Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows.” Twenty-eight years after Barbara Harris became the first African-American woman to be elected a suffrgagan bishop, he becomes the first black woman to assume full power over a diocese.  (diocesan photo)

A Buddhist nun spins a prayer wheel as she passes thousands of hand-built cells surrounding an influential monastery in Sichuan Province, China. Government bulldozers are now tearing them down in China’s constant effort to suppress religion, but people are still building their little booths. Christian monasteries developed in much the same way; a solitary hermit would find a cave and go into hiding to pray, then other people would find out and want what that person had. Channing M. Williams was a Virginia farmer’s son who graduated from college and seminary, then offered himself as a missionary to China, where he was ordained priest. He spent two years there, then was sent to Japan, where he opened his work in Nagasaki. In 1866 he was named bishop for both nations, but soon concentrated on Japan and founded St. Paul’s University. In 1887 he helped consolidate the English and American missions to form Nippon Sei Ko Kai, the Holy Catholic Church of Japan. After retirement he remained in Kyoto, supporting his successors and opening new missions until returning to the USA shortly before he died in 1910. (The Rev. Tobias Haller, BSG)

Suddenly a spirit seizes him, and all at once he shrieks. It convulses him until he foams at the mouth; it mauls him and will scarcely leave him. I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” Jesus answered, “You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be with you and bear with you? An argument arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest. But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side, and said to them, “Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.”

John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you.”

Richard Rolle, a Yorkshireman, became a hermit at 18, living alone on a squire’s estate for about three years. After that little is certain about his life; he may have moved on to other patrons, he may have enrolled at the Sorbonne in Paris to study theology, and he may have been ordained. But he left behind a wealth of commentaries, meditations, essays and letters, with hundreds of extant manuscripts; he rivaled Chaucer in popularity, and his cult was still going strong, especially in the north of England, at the Reformation. His shrine was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. (source unknown)

Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry spent the weekend on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota, where members of 300 indigenous American tribes have gathered thousands of people to protest the building of an oil pipeline, which they feel desecrates the land and threatens the water supply. Curry met tribal leaders, pledged the Church’s support, and preached at St. James’s, Cannon Ball, a parish which has been through a lot in the past few years; an arsonist burned down their last building. Richard Rolle left his studies at Oxford at age 18 to take up the ascetic life as a hermit, out of which grew a ministry of prayer, writing and spiritual direction. He described three kinds of mystical experiences he had had: a physical warmth in his body; an awareness of God’s great sweetness; and a heavenly music that he heard as he chanted the psalms. Margery Kempe had intense visions of Jesus Christ, followed by periods of emotional disturbance – the same thing that happens to some people today. Once she regained her emotional balance, she often set out on a pilgrimage. Her self-titled book dates from about the same time as Julian of Norwich, her friend and mentor. In those days men thought women were incapable of producing books; they wouldn’t let women be educated, then blamed them for their ignorance. (source unknown)

Walter Hilton, an English Augustinian monk, described his own mystical experience as a “luminous darkness” which marks the transition from self-love to love of God. Interestingly, he was critical of the musical aspect of Richard Rolle’s holy visitations. In “Epistle on the Mixed Life,” he counseled a devout, wealthy friend not to give up his life in the world, but to pursue contemplation as well. (source unknown)
