If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.

The altar at St. John’s, Huntington, West Virginia, was hit by an arsonist Monday night; police have taken a 12-year-old girl into custody. A community meal had to be canceled, but no one was hurt, and the congregation was back the next night to pray for her and give thanks the damage wasn’t worse. (parish photo)

Flowers decorated a bus stop in Moorooka, Australia last weekend after a bus driver was killed and 13 passengers were injured when a man threw a molotov cocktail on the bus. The well-liked driver, Manmeet Alisher, was an immigrant from Punjab, and suspicions were quickly raised that it was a hate crime. A man was quickly arrested, and has been described in media reports as an "erratic loner," which may cast doubt on the anti-immigrant theory; either way, what a tragedy this is. The whole assembly kept silence, and listened to Barnabas and Paul as they told of all the signs and wonders that God had done through them among the Gentiles.

It has helped the city respond to two major crises in its history; besides the yellow fever epidemic of 1878, it was the scene of a dramatic march after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. Clergy from many churches and synagogues gathered there for an emergency meeting after which the Dean, William Dimmick, picked up the processional cross and led the way to City Hall to ask the mayor to settle the sanitation workers' strike which had brought King to the city. Dimmick's heroic leadership nevertheless led to a backlash among his white parishioners; half of them left and never went back. (originalmemphis.org)

The Rev. Tobias S. Haller: St. James of Jerusalem. There are many Jameses in the New Testament, and technical questions about what the word "brother" means, but none about the leadership of James the Just, Bishop of Jerusalem. A late convert himself, he brought so many people to Christ that the religious authorities of the city begged him to reverse the tide. They took him to the pinnacle of the Temple, demanding that he denounce all belief in Jesus as Messiah. But he preached his brother instead, so the rabbis flung him off the roof to his death.

John 7:37-52 (NRSV)

On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.'” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

When they heard these words, some in the crowd said, “This is really the prophet.” Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some asked, “Surely the Messiah does not come from Galilee, does he? Has not the scripture said that the Messiah is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?” So there was a division in the crowd because of him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

Then the temple police went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why did you not arrest him?” The police answered, “Never has anyone spoken like this!” Then the Pharisees replied, “Surely you have not been deceived too, have you? Has any one of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, which does not know the law—they are accursed.” Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before, and who was one of them, asked, “Our law does not judge people without first giving them a hearing to find out what they are doing, does it?” They replied, “Surely you are not also from Galilee, are you? The words of the Teacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. What do people gain from all the toil at which they toil under the sun?

A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever. The sun rises and the sun goes down, and hurries to the place where it rises. The wind blows to the south, and goes around to the north; round and round goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns. All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they continue to flow. All things are wearisome; more than one can express; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, or the ear filled with hearing.

What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has already been, in the ages before us. The people of long ago are not remembered, nor will there be any remembrance of people yet to come by those who come after them.

Acts 8:26-40 (NRSV)

Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a wilderness road.) So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot and join it.” So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He replied, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this:

“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter,
and like a lamb silent before its shearer,
so he does not open his mouth.
In his humiliation justice was denied him.
Who can describe his generation?
For his life is taken away from the earth.”

The eunuch asked Philip, “About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Pharaoh’s magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, but they could not. There were gnats on both humans and animals. And the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God!”

Donald Trump held a campaign rally at Hickory, North Carolina on Monday and was met with protesters as usual – topics of no interest to us until now, because of where the rally was held: Lenoir-Rhyne University, which is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, the closest ecumenical partner of The Episcopal Church. Two developments have drawn our notice since then: the Episcopal House of Bishops released a unanimous statement Tuesday decrying the current U.S. political climate. The timing is coincidental, but the statement reads, “In a country still living under the shadow of the lynching tree, we are troubled by the violent forces being released by this season’s political rhetoric. Americans are turning against their neighbors, particularly those on the margins of society. There is legitimate reason to fear where this rhetoric and the actions arising from it might take us. We reject the idolatrous notion that we can ensure the safety of some by sacrificing the hopes of others. No matter where we fall on the political spectrum, we must respect the dignity of every human being and we must seek the common good above all else. We call for prayer for our country that a spirit of reconciliation will prevail and we will not betray our true selves.” The second development was aimed directly at the ELCA and Lenoir-Rhyne: a big online activist group called Faithful America, organized by the National Council of Churches in 2004 as a religious version of MoveOn, has released a petition condemning the candidate, the rally, the location – and the ELCA Presiding Bishop’s comment, “We don’t cut off debate.” Through it all, Trump carried North Carolina in the primary election and appears close to locking up the Republican nomination for president. Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, and said, “Pray to the LORD to take away the frogs from me and my people, and I will let the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.” Moses said to Pharaoh, “Kindly tell me when I am to pray for you and for your officials and for your people, that the frogs may be removed from you and your houses and be left only in the Nile.” And he said, “Tomorrow.” Moses said, “As you say! So that you may know that there is no one like the LORD our God, the frogs shall leave you and your houses and your officials and your people; they shall be left only in the Nile.” Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh; and Moses cried out to the LORD concerning the frogs that he had brought upon Pharaoh. And the LORD did as Moses requested: the frogs died in the houses, the courtyards, and the fields. And they gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank. But when Pharaoh saw that there was a respite, he hardened his heart, and would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, so that it may become gnats throughout the whole land of Egypt.’” And they did so; Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth, and gnats came on humans and animals alike; all the dust of the earth turned into gnats throughout the whole land of Egypt. Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.

I will put my Spirit upon him,
and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.

A group of Bangladeshi hunger strikers ended their protest Tuesday at the U.S. immigration detention center in El Paso, Texas; asylum-seekers from India, Pakistan and Afghanistan also participated in the strike. All were approved for what’s called a “credible fear finding,” meaning they could prove they’d be hurt if they went home; those who pass that test are supposed to be released. But the immigration agency has been holding onto them and even deported one Bangladeshi, because a few are members of a political party another agency considers an “undesignated Tier III terrorist organization” – the same reason they’d be in danger in Bangladesh. So are they victims or terrorists or what? Some advocates say the real problem is that immigration is under a Congressional mandate to keep its beds full, so these guys have been nabbed by Catch-22. Belief in evolution correlated with religious views in the U.S., according to Pew Research. Sixty percent of white evangelicals deny evolution, along with 47% of black evangelicals; Roman Catholic numbers aren’t great, and neither are those for white mainliners. Or you can look at the results the other way; 34% of white evangelicals do believe that life evolves, despite all the rhetoric otherwise.

So it was that for an entire year they met with the church and taught a great many people, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called “Christians.”

While Pope Francis, an Argentine, was touring in South America last week, a famous Argentine evangelist, the Rev. Luis Palau, held a giant rally in New York City’s Central Park, attracting a crowd of 600,000. THE LESSONS
1 Samuel 18:5-16, 27b-30 (NRSV)

David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him; as a result, Saul set him over the army. And all the people, even the servants of Saul, approved.

As they were coming home, when David returned from killing the Philistine, the women came out of all the towns of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments. And the women sang to one another as they made merry,

“Saul has killed his thousands,
and David his ten thousands.”

Saul was very angry, for this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands; what more can he have but the kingdom?” So Saul eyed David from that day on.

The next day an evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house, while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand; and Saul threw the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice.

Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him but had departed from Saul. So Saul removed him from his presence, and made him a commander of a thousand; and David marched out and came in, leading the army. David had success in all his undertakings; for the LORD was with him. When Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in awe of him. But all Israel and Judah loved David; for it was he who marched out and came in leading them.

And David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. Saul gave him his daughter Michal as a wife. But when Saul realized that the LORD was with David, and that Saul’s daughter Michal loved him, Saul was still more afraid of David. So Saul was David’s enemy from that time forward.

Then the commanders of the Philistines came out to battle; and as often as they came out, David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his fame became very great.

At that time prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine over all the world; and this took place during the reign of Claudius. The disciples determined that according to their ability, each would send relief to the believers living in Judea; this they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.

As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.” And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling he said to him, “If you choose, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I do choose. Be made clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. After sternly warning him he sent him away at once, saying to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer go into a town openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him from every quarter.

Like a lot of American colonists, Weiser took many jobs and made money whatever way he could. He emigrated from Germany, settled in Berks County, Pennsylvania, was troubled by violence between the settlers and Native American Indians, learned the Iroquois language and served as a diplomat and peacemaker, as well as adviser to William Penn and Benjamin Franklin. Of Lutheran descent, he joined the Seventh-Day Baptist movement and took up residence for a time at Ephrata Cloister.

Like a lot of American colonists, Weiser held many jobs and made money whatever way he could. An emigrant from Germany, he settled in upstate New York, and later Berks County in the colony of Penn’s Woods. He was troubled by violence between the settlers and Native American Indians, so learned the Iroquois language and served as a diplomat and peacemaker, as well as adviser to William Penn and Benjamin Franklin. Of Lutheran descent, he joined the Seventh-Day Baptist movement and took up residence for a time at Ephrata Cloister. His son-in-law Henry M. Muhlenberg is considered the patriarch of American Lutherans. Weiser is honoured by monuments, parks and schools all over southeast Pennsylvania.

Almighty God, of your grace you gave Conrad Weiser the gift of diplomacy, the insight to understand two different cultures and interpret each to the other with clarity and honesty: As we strive to be faithful to our vocation to commend your kingdom, help us to proclaim the Gospel to the many cultures around us, that by your Holy Spirit we may be effective ambassadors for our Savior Jesus Christ; who with you and the same Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
