Jesus spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent).

The U.S. Supreme Court has unanimously rejected the legal claim that public schools are within the law when they provide only the most minimal education to children with disabilities. The law is vague, the court said, but for a reason: every child is different and education must be tailored to them. This is considered a victory for parents and children. But the court didn’t touch the question of whether parents can sue schools for private tuition reimbursement when parents find a better alternative than the school offers. St. Richard became the Pope’s point man in clashes with King Henry III in championing Rome’s rights over the king, especially when clergy were charged with crimes or were victims of them. This was the same issue Thomas Becket faced a century before, and which would finally be decided by Henry VIII’s break with Rome. Richard focused on disciplining the clergy, especially by imposing Rome’s demand for celibacy, disinheriting and punishing their wives. The LORD showed me two baskets of figs placed before the temple of the LORD. This was after King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon had taken into exile from Jerusalem King Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim of Judah, together with the officials of Judah, the artisans, and the smiths, and had brought them to Babylon. One basket had very good figs, like first-ripe figs, but the other basket had very bad figs, so bad that they could not be eaten. And the LORD said to me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” I said, “Figs, the good figs very good, and the bad figs very bad, so bad that they cannot be eaten.”

Then the word of the LORD came to me: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so I will regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I have sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans. What then are we to say? Gentiles, who did not strive for righteousness, have attained it, that is, righteousness through faith; but Israel, who did strive for the righteousness that is based on the law, did not succeed in fulfilling that law. Why not? Because they did not strive for it on the basis of faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, “See, I am laying in Zion a stone that will make people stumble, a rock that will make them fall, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

St. Richard was a humble ascetic, scholar and professor; as bishop he was an able administrator committed both to disciplining the clergy and protecting them during periodic clashes with King Henry III. Headline in The New York Times recently: “When Gangs Killed Gay Men for Sport: Australia Reviews 88 Deaths.” The “game” was forcing Gay men off a cliff high above Sydney harbour, which police knew about, tolerated, explained away and even encouraged, without investigating, interviewing witnesses or looking for evidence. (The same thing happens in U.S. jurisdictions too.) When members of a demographic group are deemed expendable by the major institutions of society – Gay people, Rohingyas, Dalits, Muslims in general, refugees, the homeless, women and girls – the result is to make them the prey of everyone. Anskar received two visions from God telling him to “Go and declare the work of God to the nations,” but his monastic brothers in Germany thought he was crazy for wanting to go and evangelize the barbarous Vikings of Denmark and Sweden. He tried his best, but the results were meager; two churches, a school and one priest. A century later, however, times changed, and people remembered his efforts.

Evening Prayer 19.1.17, Wulfstan, Bishop of Worcester, 1095

Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how.”

Thomas Oommen, the Bishop of Madhya Kerala, was elected Moderator of the Church of South India at its 35th Synod in Kottayam, just a few months after celebrating his diocese’s 200th anniversary. “The boundaries of the denominations of the Christian Church must become thinner in order to proclaim Jesus in practice,” he said. He pledged to continue to “take up the cause of ecological concerns, of the rights of dalits and adivasis and the need for gender equality. We will continue to oppose injustice, particularly where it concerns the rights of Dalit Christians.” The church was formed in 1947, the year of Indian independence, as a merger of several Protestant denominations while retaining episcopal order and polity. He will serve half-time in his own diocese and half at CSI headquarters in Chennai. (Church of South India)

The Abbot Wolfstan became Bishop of Worcester four years prior to William the Conqueror’s invasion of England, and overcame the new king’s disdain when he professed obedience on canonical grounds to the new Archbishop of Canterbury Lanfranc. Wulfstan kept his see, lived another 30 years and presided over the transition from an Anglo-Saxon church to an Anglo-French one.

Morning Prayer 9.9.16, Constance & Companions, Martyrs of Memphis, 1878

The whole assembly kept silence, and listened to Barnabas and Paul as they told of all the signs and wonders that God had done through them among the Gentiles.

St. Mary’s Cathedral, Memphis, Tennessee. It has helped the city respond to two major crises in its history; in addition to the yellow fever epidemic of 1878, in which Constance and other Sisters of Mary cared for the dying with such devotion, it was also the scene of a dramatic march after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. Clergy from many churches and synagogues gathered there for an emergency meeting after which the Dean, William Dimmick, picked up the processional cross and led the way to City Hall to ask the mayor to settle the sanitation workers’ strike which had brought King to the city. Dimmick’s heroic leadership led to a backlash among his white parishioners; half of them left and never went back, but the church was better for it. (originalmemphis.org)

CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. “If I have rejoiced at the ruin of those who hated me, or exulted when evil overtook them—I have not let my mouth sin by asking for their lives with a curse—if those of my tent ever said, ‘O that we might be sated with his flesh!’—the stranger has not lodged in the street; I have opened my doors to the traveler—if I have concealed my transgressions as others do, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom, because I stood in great fear of the multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and did not go out of doors—O that I had one to hear me! I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

Sister Constance and three other nuns of the Community of St. Mary, as well as two missionary priests, were among the martyrs of all denominations who gave their lives to care for residents of Memphis, Tennessee during a deadly yellow fever epidemic.
