Jesus cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink.”

Rend your hearts, and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, who is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil. Joel 2:13

GENERAL CONFESSION

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,
in ourselves, and in the world you have created.
We repent of the evil that enslaves us,

John 7:37-52 (NRSV)

On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.'” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

When they heard these words, some in the crowd said, “This is really the prophet.” Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some asked, “Surely the Messiah does not come from Galilee, does he? Has not the scripture said that the Messiah is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?” So there was a division in the crowd because of him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

Then the temple police went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why did you not arrest him?” The police answered, “Never has anyone spoken like this!” Then the Pharisees replied, “Surely you have not been deceived too, have you? Has any one of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, which does not know the law—they are accursed.” Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before, and who was one of them, asked, “Our law does not judge people without first giving them a hearing to find out what they are doing, does it?” They replied, “Surely you are not also from Galilee, are you? Search and you will see that no prophet is to arise from Galilee.”

Anglicans have prayed in their native languages since 1549 because of this man, Thomas Cranmer, author and editor of the Book of Common Prayer. He combined various prayers from the elaborate monastic Liturgy of the Hours to give us Morning and Evening Prayer, composing phrases and creating worship used throughout the English-speaking world. Merciful God, through the work of Thomas Cranmer you renewed the worship of your Church by restoring the language of the people, and through his death you revealed your power in human weakness: Grant that by your grace we may always worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Jesus said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers.”

While Jesus was teaching in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David? David himself, by the Holy Spirit, declared,

‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.”‘

“David himself calls him Lord; so how can he be his son?” And the large crowd was listening to him with delight.

He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

Jesus departed with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him; hearing all that he was doing, they came to him in great numbers.

President Obama isn’t finished yet, and a few days ago he created more national monuments, including strengthening protections for the civil rights district in Birmingham, Alabama, centered on the 16th Street Baptist Church, where in 1963 four girls were killed and others were maimed while waiting for the start of Sunday School. Four members of the Ku Klux Klan set off 19 sticks of dynamite, but no one was arrested or tried until 1977, when three of the four (the other one had died) were convicted of murder. A year after the bombing, following a monthlong debate, Congress finally passed the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 with bipartisan support. (Associated Press)

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested 30 times in his short life, most notably in Birmingham, where he wrote his famous Letter from a Birmingham Jail; but this is not that booking photo; that day he was wearing blue jeans and a casual shirt. We believe this may be the mug shot taken after his first arrest in 1955 for leading the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, a yearlong campaign that launched him to world prominence. Our search for the origin of this photo proved fruitless, except in illustrating how often it has been republished around the world. You’re looking at the best of America here; take hope from it, even as the USA prepares to inaugurate a right-wing anarchist.

When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive;
he gave gifts to his people.

We honour today’s saints because of their roles in reviving the monastic life in Anglicanism. Charles Gore was a theologian at Pusey House, Oxford, home of the Anglo-Catholic Oxford Movement, which sought to restore the pre-Reformation theology and practice of the Church of England while maintaining its independence from Rome. It was a very conservative movement with a great longing for medievalism, but no effective response to German Biblical criticism. Gore’s thought started with a similar catholic understanding, but broadened to answer the intellectual threat that scientific scholarship seemed to pose, and to respond to the appalling poverty and displacement caused by the Industrial Revolution. He made social justice prominent in Anglo-Catholic theology and ministry, and founded the Community of the Resurrection, a monastic order for priests, for whom Mass and Mission are twinned concerns. I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.

But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it is said,

“When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive;

(When it says, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.

THE LESSON
John 7:37-52 (NRSV)

On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.'” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

When they heard these words, some in the crowd said, “This is really the prophet.” Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some asked, “Surely the Messiah does not come from Galilee, does he? Has not the scripture said that the Messiah is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?” So there was a division in the crowd because of him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

Then the temple police went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why did you not arrest him?” The police answered, “Never has anyone spoken like this!” Then the Pharisees replied, “Surely you have not been deceived too, have you? Has any one of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, which does not know the law—they are accursed.” Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before, and who was one of them, asked, “Our law does not judge people without first giving them a hearing to find out what they are doing, does it?” They replied, “Surely you are not also from Galilee, are you? Besides inspiring Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Thomas Becket’s enduring popularity found expression among the carvers of Nottingham alabaster 300 years later; here we see him enthroned as Primate. He is still revered among English Catholics today for what they consider his steadfastness in upholding his principles regarding Catholic doctrine and the power of the pope; critics wonder what principle was involved, given that he changed his views entirely once he became archbishop and a rival to the king. This window at St. Andrew’s, Bemerton, Wiltshire, features Nicholas Ferrar on the left and his close friend George Herbert on the right; Ferrar, a bookbinder, was the person Herbert entrusted with his manuscript of “The Temple,” with instructions to publish it if Ferrar thought it might help some poor soul, but to burn it if he did not. Ferrar published it, and literature is glad he did. But Ferrar is also beloved on his own, for forming the Christian community at Little Gidding with his family and close friends. It’s considered a forerunner of the re-establishment of monastic orders in Anglicanism after the Reformation. Puritans criticized Ferrar for his “Protestant nunnery,” but it wasn’t founded as a monastery and formal vows were never given. The funeral for television journalist Gwen Ifill was held at the historic Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. over the weekend, with photos, audio and video clips and the reminiscences of friends and colleagues, from President & Mrs. Obama to former Attorney General Eric Holder and Judy Woodruff, her co-anchor on the PBS NewsHour; the service lasted three hours. Ms. Ifill was the daughter of an AME pastor who emigrated from Barbados to New York City before she was born. John Merbecke was a theologian as well as a composer; his Calvinist beliefs led him to strongly support the reformed Church of England and its 1549 Book of Common Prayer – which he set to music the next year so the Eucharist, psalms and canticles could be chanted in English. But his music was quickly rendered obsolete when a new, even more Calvinist edition of the BCP came out in 1552. Merbecke’s music languished for centuries until it was rediscovered in the 19th century by, ironically, Anglo-Catholics looking to restore the ancient beauty of the liturgy. From then on Merbecke was widely sung throughout the Anglican Communion until modern language liturgies began replacing the Elizabethan “thee’s and thou’s” of the 1662 Prayer Book. Today his music is mostly heard in concert.

People were bringing even infants to Jesus that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they sternly ordered them not to do it. But Jesus called for them and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. To what should I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.

Flowers decorated a bus stop near Brisbane, Australia last weekend after a bus driver was killed and 11 passengers were injured when a man threw a molotov cocktail on the bus. The well-liked driver, Manmeet Alisher, 29, was an immigrant from Punjab, and suspicions were quickly raised that it might be a hate crime. A man was soon arrested, and has been described in media reports as an “erratic loner,” which may cast doubt on the anti-immigrant theory; either way, what a tragedy to lose this young man, making his way successfully in a new country. Against Puritan critics, Richard Hooker defended the Elizabethan Settlement of a reformed catholic religion using the Book of Common Prayer. The faith rests, he said, on a three-legged stool of Scripture, Tradition and Reason.

Pope Francis visited Malmos, Sweden a few days ago to encourage reconciliation between Rome and World Lutheranism, kicking off a year of activities leading to the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s nailing “95 Theses” to the church door in Wittenburg and the beginning of the Protestant Reform. But the pope made much more news during an airborne news conference on his way home, in which he asserted that the Roman Church will never ordain women priests because John Paul II said not to – a stance sure to make more Protestants over time. those who gave counsel because they were intelligent;

they were wise in their words of instruction;

The sixth angel poured his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up in order to prepare the way for the kings from the east. And I saw three foul spirits like frogs coming from the mouth of the dragon, from the mouth of the beast, and from the mouth of the false prophet. These are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. (“See, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and is clothed, not going about naked and exposed to shame.”) And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Harmagedon.

The seventh angel poured his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, “It is done!” And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, and a violent earthquake, such as had not occurred since people were upon the earth, so violent was that earthquake.
