GENERAL CONFESSION

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,

John 7:37-52 (NRSV)

On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.'” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

When they heard these words, some in the crowd said, “This is really the prophet.” Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some asked, “Surely the Messiah does not come from Galilee, does he? Has not the scripture said that the Messiah is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?” So there was a division in the crowd because of him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

Then the temple police went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why did you not arrest him?” The police answered, “Never has anyone spoken like this!” Then the Pharisees replied, “Surely you have not been deceived too, have you? Has any one of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, which does not know the law—they are accursed.” Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before, and who was one of them, asked, “Our law does not judge people without first giving them a hearing to find out what they are doing, does it?” They replied, “Surely you are not also from Galilee, are you? Search and you will see that no prophet is to arise from Galilee.”

He combined various prayers from the elaborate monastic Liturgy of the Hours to give us Morning and Evening Prayer, composing phrases and creating worship used throughout the English-speaking world. Merciful God, through the work of Thomas Cranmer you renewed the worship of your Church by restoring the language of the people, and through his death you revealed your power in human weakness: Grant that by your grace we may always worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

E. Clinton Bamberger has died, an American lawyer who established the right of defendants to exculpatory evidence discovered by prosecutors, known as the Brady Rule. Ironically, he lost that case because the Supreme Court refused to grant his client a new trial, even as it established that his original trial was tainted. Bamberger was the first director of the Legal Services Corporation established by Congress under President Johnson; a Roman Catholic, he worked his entire life to provide justice for ordinary people. Thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, “I dwell in the high and holy place and also with the one who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite.” Isaiah 57:15

Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the profane chatter and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge; by professing it some have missed the mark as regards the faith.

Greg Copeland: Luther Nailing His Theses to the Church Door. He was a professor of theology and a former monk whose two central ideas were these: that we are saved by God’s grace, not by good works or buying our way out of God’s judgment; and that the Bible is the only source of authoritative teaching about God. Dorchester Chaplains of World War II memorial in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They were four American chaplains – a Roman Catholic priest, a Methodist minister, a Jewish rabbi and a Reformed Church minister, Fr. John P. Washington; the Rev. George L. Fox; Rabbi Alexander D. Goode; and the Rev. Clark V. Poling. They gave their lives to save U.S. troops aboard the transport ship Dorchester, hit by torpedoes between New York City and Greenland, helping load soldiers into the only two working lifeboats and, when space ran out, giving their own lifejackets that others could be saved – and more than 200 were. Morning Prayer 3.2.17, The Dorchester Chaplains, 1943

Maintain justice, and do what is right,
for soon my salvation will come,
and my deliverance be revealed.

They were two Protestants, a Roman Catholic and a Jew – and they ministered to their men all the same, without regard to religion or creed. They were assigned to accompany 900 U.S. troops sailing from New York to Britain via Greenland aboard the USAT Dorchester. On 3 February, 1943 their ship was fatally struck by torpedoes from a German U-boat; in the chaos that followed most soldiers left their lifejackets behind. Only two of 14 lifeboats made it successfully into the sea, forcing most to jump into the icy waters. The chaplains moved among them, calming and reassuring, passing out lifejackets, and finally giving up their own so more men could live; 230 did survive, but the chaplains linked arms, prayed and went down with the ship. After the war in 1948, the U.S. Post Office issued this first-class commemorative stamp in their memory.

The hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. John 4:23

The Rev. George L. Fox, a Methodist minister, lied about his age to enlist as an Army medic in World War I, and was highly decorated for heroism. Afterward he graduated from high school in Pennsylvania, studied at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and became an itinerant preacher. He eventually graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University and went to seminary at Boston University; he was ordained a Methodist minister in 1934, serving congregations in Vermont until re-enlisting as a chaplain in 1942.

Lt. Rabbi Alexander Goode was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Washington, D.C. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati, Hebrew Union College and earned a doctorate at Johns Hopkins University, and served synagogues in Marion, Indiana and York, Pennsylvania before being accepted as an Army chaplain. He died at 31, leaving behind his wife and daughter.

Lt. Clark V. Poling, the son of a Baptist minister and chaplain during World War I, grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York and played football in high school. He graduated from Rutgers University and Yale Divinity School, was ordained in the Reformed Church of America and pastored in church in Schnectady, N.Y. When the Second World War broke out he enlisted immediately. He was married to Elizabeth, had a young son named Corky, and his daughter Susan Elizabeth was born three months after his death.

Lt. Father John P. Washington was the son of Irish immigrants and grew up in Newark, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from New York City. He was an altar boy who became a gang leader; but a call to the priesthood turned his life around. He went to high school at a minor seminary and graduated from the School of Theology at Seton Hall University, then was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1935. He enlisted in the Army immediately after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. His next of kin received his Four Chaplains Medal established by Congress, along with the other families, from the Secretary of the Army in 1961.

Isaiah 7:1-9 (NRSV)

In the days of Ahaz son of Jotham son of Uzziah, king of Judah, King Rezin of Aram and King Pekah son of Remaliah of Israel went up to attack Jerusalem, but could not mount an attack against it. When the house of David heard that Aram had allied itself with Ephraim, the heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.

Then the LORD said to Isaiah, Go out to meet Ahaz, you and your son Shear-jashub, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Fuller’s Field, and say to him, Take heed, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands, because of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and the son of Remaliah. Because Aram—with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah—has plotted evil against you, saying, Let us go up against Judah and cut off Jerusalem and conquer it for ourselves and make the son of Tabeel king in it; therefore thus says the Lord GOD:

It shall not stand,

For the head of Aram is Damascus,

As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? And you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed when his time comes. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but only until the one who now restrains it is removed. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will destroy with the breath of his mouth, annihilating him by the manifestation of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is apparent in the working of Satan, who uses all power, signs, lying wonders, and every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion, leading them to believe what is false, so that all who have not believed the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned.

So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us that we may eat it.” They asked him, “Where do you want us to make preparations for it?” “Listen,” he said to them, “when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house he enters and say to the owner of the house, ‘The teacher asks you, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”‘ He will show you a large room upstairs, already furnished. Make preparations for us there.” So they went and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.

He was a moderate Puritan, a chaplain to Cromwell’s army during the Civil War; afterward Charles II offered him the See of Hereford, but he didn’t accept, ending his career in the Established Church. The funeral for television journalist Gwen Ifill was held at the historic Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. over the weekend, with photos, audio and video clips and the reminiscences of friends and colleagues, from President & Mrs. Obama to former Attorney General Eric Holder and Judy Woodruff, her co-anchor on the PBS NewsHour; the service lasted three hours. Ms. Ifill was the daughter of an AME pastor who emigrated from Barbados to New York City before she was born. John Merbecke was a theologian as well as a composer; his Calvinist beliefs led him to strongly support the reformed Church of England and its 1549 Book of Common Prayer – which he set to music the next year so the Eucharist, psalms and canticles could be chanted in English. But his music was quickly rendered obsolete when a new, even more Calvinist edition of the BCP came out in 1552. Merbecke’s music languished for centuries until it was rediscovered in the 19th century by, ironically, Anglo-Catholics looking to restore the ancient beauty of the liturgy. From then on Merbecke was widely sung throughout the Anglican Communion until modern language liturgies began replacing the Elizabethan “thee’s and thou’s” of the 1662 Prayer Book. Today his music is mostly heard in concert.

People were bringing even infants to Jesus that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they sternly ordered them not to do it. But Jesus called for them and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. A certain ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. John Everett Millais: Victory, O Lord. While Joshua was fighting the Amalekites, Moses had to stand with his arms upraised. But he got tired, so Aaron and Hur sat him down and lifted his arms up for him. The lifting of one’s arms is an act of prayer; what power there is in a liturgical act!

Exodus 17:1-16 (NRSV)

From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. The people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD?” But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried out to the LORD, “What shall I do with this people? Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s life united faith, prayer, writing and action. He was a pacifist theologian who accepted the guilt of plotting against Hitler because he was convinced that breaking God’s commandment against murder was preferable to keeping silent in the face of mass murder. He taught that discipleship can cost you your life, and he paid with his.

Eric Liddell monument at the former Weihsien internment camp, Weifang, Shandong, China. The year after his Olympic gold medal, Liddell returned to North China, near his birthplace, was ordained in 1932, married the daughter of Canadian missionaries, had three daughters and endured many hardships due to ongoing conflict between Japan and China. After Pearl Harbor, the British government advised its citizens to evacuate China, and Mrs. Liddell took the girls to Canada, while her husband and his brother Rob stayed on and continued their work. Eric was imprisoned at the concentration camp, where he was remembered by survivors for his ministry to other prisoners. He died shortly before the camp was liberated.

Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went through all the land of Egypt. During the seven plenteous years the earth produced abundantly. He gathered up all the food of the seven years when there was plenty in the land of Egypt, and stored up food in the cities; he stored up in every city the food from the fields around it. So Joseph stored up grain in such abundance—like the sand of the sea—that he stopped measuring it; it was beyond measure.

Before the years of famine came, Joseph had two sons, whom Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him. Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh, “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s house.” The second he named Ephraim, “For God has made me fruitful in the land of my misfortunes.”

The seven years of plenty that prevailed in the land of Egypt came to an end; and the seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. Gold medalist Eric Liddell at the Paris Olympics, 1924. He was born in China, the son of missionaries, and educated in Britain, where his athletic talent emerged. His refusal to run in the 100-meter dash because it was held on a Sunday was immortalized in the film “Chariots of Fire.” But his return to China and service to his fellow prisoners of war is why he’s on our calendar.

Everliving God, whose will it is that all should come to you through your Son Jesus Christ: Inspire our witness to him, that all may know the power of his forgiveness and the hope of his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfil now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting.
