Whoever knows God listens to us, and whoever is not from God does not listen to us. From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

A very large crowd marched on Washington, D.C. Saturday, protesting U.S. government policy on climate change. It was the 100th day of Donald Trump’s presidency, amid record-setting heat. The most popular signs said “There is no Planet B.” (Washington Post)

But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. Pope Francis of Rome made a quick trip to Egypt last week, hoping to protect and strengthen the Coptic community and reaching out to Muslim leaders to encourage religious tolerance and peace. He’s seen above with Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II at an outdoor Mass at a soccer stadium, a relatively small crowd for Francis. Tensions have been high after the most recent bombings of Coptic churches, which killed scores and injured over 100. About 10% of Egypt’s population of 90 million is Coptic, of whom 1% follow Francis and 99% follow Tawadros. (L’Osservatore Romano)

Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. You have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God.

The choir of Merton College at Oxford University sang at the first Anglican Evensong ever conducted at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome a couple of weeks ago; a historic event, surely, but so uncontroversial in 2017 that few people noticed, though today’s saint might have liked it. (Vatican photo)

While we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. But now we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us captive, so that we are slaves not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.

What then should we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet, if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” But sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died, and the very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good.

When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

Charles Henry Brent, a rector’s son, was born in Newcastle, Ontario; his mother was descended from Loyalists who fled the American Revolution. He was educated at Trinity College, Toronto, but the only work he found was as a curate and organist in Buffalo, New York. He moved to Boston, came under the influence of the Cowley Fathers, spent ten years as curate in the underprivileged South End, then in 1901 was shocked to get a telegram naming him missionary Bishop of the Philippines, then governed by the United States. He stayed 15 years, establishing schools and hospitals before leaving to assume the senior chaplaincy with the Allied Expeditionary Force in World War I. He hated the war and devoted himself afterward to peace and ecumenical activities as Bishop of Western New York. (Brown Brothers)

For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

Among the recent missioner-guests at the Rosebud Episcopal Mission on the Lakota reservation in South Dakota were these medical students from the University of Chicago, who learned how to chop firewood for the mission’s Heat for the Elders program. These are some of the most gifted and privileged students in the United States, learning to serve the poor and save lives not through chemistry or surgery, but by physical labor. (The Rev. Lauren R. Judah mourns
and her gates languish;

they come to the cisterns,
they find no water,

Archbishop Romero is the most famous of the 70,000 Salvadoran Martyrs, but many other clergy, religious and lay ministers were also slain, including Maryknoll Sisters Ita Ford and Maura Clarke, Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel and lay minister Jean Donovan, who were raped, killed by the side of the road and buried in a shallow grave in 1980. John 8:33-47 (NRSV)

The Pharisees answered Jesus, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?”

Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you look for an opportunity to kill me, because there is no place in you for my word. I declare what I have seen in the Father’s presence; as for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father.”

They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing what Abraham did, but now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. You are indeed doing what your father does.” They said to him, “We are not illegitimate children; we have one father, God himself.” Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now I am here. I did not come on my own, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot accept my word. The Rt. Rev. Jim Jelinek, VIII Bishop of Minnesota, was the first to teach me about the Armenian Genocide, when he celebrated Mass for another group of exiles called Integrity back in the 1970s. Most Episcopal priests, even in a progressive diocese, wanted nothing to do with LGBT Christians, but he not only told us his people’s story, he wanted to hear ours. But the free gift is not like the trespass. Therefore just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. Gregory’s success in converting Armenia was by no means assured; his father had assasinated the previous king years before. On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.'” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

When they heard these words, some in the crowd said, “This is really the prophet.” Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some asked, “Surely the Messiah does not come from Galilee, does he? For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation.

For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”)—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.
