Whoever knows God listens to us, and whoever is not from God does not listen to us. From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

A very large crowd marched on Washington, D.C. Saturday, protesting U.S. government policy on climate change. It was the 100th day of Donald Trump’s presidency, amid record-setting heat. The most popular signs said “There is no Planet B.” (Washington Post)

Pope Francis of Rome made a quick trip to Egypt last week, hoping to protect and strengthen the Coptic community and reaching out to Muslim leaders to encourage religious tolerance and peace. He’s seen above with Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II at an outdoor Mass at a soccer stadium, a relatively small crowd for Francis. Tensions have been high after the most recent bombings of Coptic churches, which killed scores and injured over 100. About 10% of Egypt’s population of 90 million is Coptic, of whom 1% follow Francis and 99% follow Tawadros. (L’Osservatore Romano)

Mildred Dresselhaus has died, an American physicist known for her analysis of the fundamental properties of carbon. She was the first female full professor at the leading U.S. engineering school, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and spent her entire career promoting women in science; late in life she even became a bit of a media personality and role model for girls who like math, science and how things work. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. Prestigious Yale University in Connecticut has decided to drop the name of racist 19th Century U.S. Senator John C. Calhoun from one of its residential colleges and replace it with that of an alumna, Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, a pioneering computer scientist who helped develop fundamental ideas of programming during and after World War II, leading to the development of the COBOL programming language, among a raft of accomplishments. She left the Naval Reserve at the mandatory age of 60, then was brought back to active duty two years later, and remained until her third and final retirement at 79. (Computer History Museum)

THE LESSON
Mark 11:27—12:12 (NRSV)

Again Jesus and the disciples came to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to him and said, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority to do them?” Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin? Answer me.” They argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But shall we say, ‘Of human origin’?”—they were afraid of the crowd, for all regarded John as truly a prophet. So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

Then he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the wine press, and built a watchtower; then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants to collect from them his share of the produce of the vineyard. But they seized him, and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. And again he sent another slave to them; this one they beat over the head and insulted. Then he sent another, and that one they killed. And so it was with many others; some they beat, and others they killed. He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. Have you not read this scripture:

‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is amazing in our eyes’?”

When they realized that he had told this parable against them, they wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowd. So they left him and went away.

It’s hard to overestimate the influence of English priest Thomas Bray on world evangelism, including the Church in America. He founded two missionary organizations, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (seal, above) and the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, which have carried the crown of Christ for almost three centuries. The Bishop of London put him in charge of the churches in Maryland colony, which he visited long enough to develop great concern for the treatment of African slaves and Native Americans. He was a prison reformer; he suggested the founding of Georgia colony to Gen. Oglethorpe for the relief of honest debtors, which took place in 1732, and fifty years later the First Fleet arrived at Sydney.

Evening Prayer 12.2.17, Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany

Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”

Dr. Peter Mansfield has died, a British physicist whose discoveries about the magnetic properties of atoms led to the invention of magnetic resonance imaging, which eliminated exploratory surgery by allowing physicians to see pictures of the body’s internal organs. He built the first MRI machine in 1978 and was the first person exposed to the scanner, though some scientists worried that it could cause cardiac fibrillation. He later developed  applications so clinicians could watch the beating of a heart and even chart the patterns of brain waves. He was knighted by the Queen in 1993 and won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine ten years later. (David Jones/Press Association)

Where do we get the ashes for Ash Wednesday? Not from little elves in a secret workshop at the South Pole, but from the burning of last year’s fronds from Palm Sunday; put them in a household broiler pan and light them in the fireplace. Once burned, the ashes have to be pulverized (with, say, a mortar and pestle) so that a mess like this turns into a little dish of charcoal dust to be smudged on people’s foreheads in the sign of the Cross. Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.”

When he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable. He said to them, “Then do you also fail to understand? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile, since it enters, not the heart but the stomach, and goes out into the sewer?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) Thomas Aquinas, a Dominican monk, saw that the rediscovery of works by Aristotle, who put reason and sense perception (science) above faith, could challenge traditional Catholic doctrine. Bishop Eddie Long has died, a Baptist Pentecostal preacher with a megachurch in suburban Atlanta which once had 25,000 members before he fell from grace. He’s seen here with Coretta Scott King and First Lady Laura Bush at a Martin Luther King Day celebration in 2002. Two years later he was leading a protest march against LGBT civil rights, including marriage, a month after Georgia voters had banned same-sex marriage in the state constitution. A few years later he was sued by several young men in his congregation who accused him of using his religious and financial influence to abuse them sexually – charges he denied but settled out of court. When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive;
he gave gifts to his people.

We honour today’s saints because of their roles in reviving the monastic life in Anglicanism. Charles Gore was a theologian at Pusey House, Oxford, home of the Anglo-Catholic Oxford Movement, which sought to restore the pre-Reformation theology and practice of the Church of England while maintaining its independence from Rome. It was a very conservative movement with a great longing for medievalism, but no effective response to German Biblical criticism. Gore’s thought started with a similar catholic understanding, but broadened to answer the intellectual threat that scientific scholarship seemed to pose, and to respond to the appalling poverty and displacement caused by the Industrial Revolution. He made social justice prominent in Anglo-Catholic theology and ministry, and founded the Community of the Resurrection, a monastic order for priests, for whom Mass and Mission are twinned concerns. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it is said,

(When it says, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.

Evening Prayer 15.1.17, Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting.

Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb has died, a very successful president of the California State University at Fullerton, widely reported as the first Black woman to head a major U.S. research institution. She was a biologist and had served as dean at two other schools, became a finalist for president of Hunter College in New York City, but was passed over due to pressure from politicians. Her grandfather had been born in slavery, and she faced discrimination too; she started college at the University of Michigan but found that Black students weren’t allowed to live on campus, so she transferred. At Fullerton, then a commuter school, she built the first on-campus housing, created new academic schools, pushed for increased minority admissions and campaigned for women in science, tech, engineering and maths. Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

New nurses graduated last month from FSIL, the Faculty of Nursing Science of the Episcopal University of Haiti. As our websites prepare for the new budget year, we are gathering information about this program as a possible mission partner. It seems to be very similar to the Martha Kelley Scholarship we sponsor at Cuttington University School of Nursing in Liberia; one way we can help improve public health in poor nations is by educating nurses, each one of whom may touch the lives of thousands in his or her career. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery; and making her stand before all of them, they said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him.
