He became to us a reproof of our thoughts;
the very sight of him is a burden to us,
because his manner of life is unlike that of others,
and his ways are strange.

CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

THE LESSONS
Wisdom 1:16 – 2:1, 12-22 (NRSV)

But the ungodly by their words and deeds summoned death;
considering him a friend, they pined away
and made a covenant with him,
because they are fit to belong to his company.
For they reasoned unsoundly, saying to themselves,
“Short and sorrowful is our life,
and there is no remedy when a life comes to its end,
and no one has been known to return from Hades.

“Let us lie in wait for the righteous man,
because he is inconvenient to us and opposes our actions;
he reproaches us for sins against the law,
and accuses us of sins against our training.
He professes to have knowledge of God,
and calls himself a child of the Lord.
He became to us a reproof of our thoughts;
the very sight of him is a burden to us,
because his manner of life is unlike that of others,
and his ways are strange.
We are considered by him as something base,
and he avoids our ways as unclean;
he calls the last end of the righteous happy,
and boasts that God is his father.
Let us see if his words are true,
and let us test what will happen at the end of his life;
for if the righteous man is God’s child, he will help him,
and will deliver him from the hand of adversaries.
Let us test him with insult and torture,
so that we may find out how gentle he is,
and make trial of his forbearance.

for, according to what he says, he will be protected.”

Thus they reasoned, but they were led astray,

1 Peter 1:10-20 (NRSV)

Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that was to be yours made careful search and inquiry, inquiring about the person or time that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated when it testified in advance to the sufferings destined for Christ and the subsequent glory. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in regard to the things that have now been announced to you through those who brought you good news by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look!

Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; for it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake.

I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us, but if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9

THE LESSON
John 10:1-18 (NRSV)

Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.” Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. Pandita Mary Ramabai faced huge barriers as an Indian woman, but she was sustained by two things: her scholarly father taught her Sanskrit and the Hindu classics, and she met strong, faithful women in London who became her role models in evangelism and social work.

Cadbury Cancels Easter: The British national Easter egg hunt, sponsored by the National Trust, sold naming rights years ago to a candymaker, which decided that it might sell more cheap chocolate bunnies this year if it got rid of Easter altogether. The move has been denounced by the prime minister and archbishops of Canterbury and York, as well as calls for a boycott, but maybe the National Trust should have thought of this earlier. Pandita Ramabai, discriminated against like other Indian women for being female from childhood on, was denied an education but managed to learn anyway. After traveling to England and working with Anglican nuns, she became a Christian, returned to India and founded a mission in Mumbai for abandoned widows and orphans, at first of the high Brahmin class and later without distinctions. She also translated the Bible into Marathi, a West Indian language. The title “Pandita” bestowed on her means, ironically, “the learned one.”

The childhood home of civil rights lawyer, priest and feminist icon Dr. Pauli Murray in Durham, North Carolina has just been named a National Historic Landmark, according to the Diocese of North Carolina, which released this photo on Twitter. Built by her grandfather, a Civil War veteran, in 1898, the home is scheduled to open to the public in 2020.

Staff Sgt. Austin Bieren died a week ago while serving as a security forces airman in northern Syria. The Department of Defense stated that he appeared to have died from natural causes in a non-combat situation. His mother Tracy Finck said joining the military had been her son’s plan from a young age. “He was amazing, kind, smart, always wanted to join the service,” she said. He leaves behind an “amazing” wife of six years, Rachel, sister Brianne Bieren and a nephew Jaren, “who he adored,” as well as parents Tracy and Jody Finck and John and Amber Bieren. According to Air Force Times, Bieren is the second American serviceman known to have died in Syria. There are currently about 900 U.S. troops there providing support to Operation Inherent Resolve. Bieren was assigned to the 21st Space Wing at Colorado’s Peterson Air Force Base. Peterson’s Facebook page said Bieren “was a valuable and beloved member of our team and will be sorely missed. His dedication to his country was evident in his actions – he was a superb Airman.”

Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes.

Episcopalians joined other interfaith leaders outside the Indiana governor’s office yesterday to press for passage of a hate crimes bill, in an era of increasing intolerance. Indiana is one of only five U.S. states to lack some kind of bias-related crime statute; a bill failed again in the state Senate but is still alive in the House. (Megan McConnell)

Victory at Malheur: Four men were convicted Friday in the armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon a year ago, including Duane Ehmer, above, striking a heroic pose as some kind of freedom fighter for the cameras. The government earlier failed to convict the ringleaders, so this trial was a consolation prize of sorts. Most important, it reestablishes the rule of law in that part of Oregon, where we have members; the conspirators’ real crime was terrorizing a town, a county and the whole area they chose to attack. Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Surely no one has brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. Do you not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

In the runup to the U.S. Civil War, racist apologists for slavery claimed that Blacks were incapable of governing themselves: too stupid, animalistic and uncivilized. Here is James Theodore Holly’s learned refutation of that outrageous claim, published four years before he led a group of New Englanders who resettled in independent Haiti. He became the first Black bishop of The Episcopal Church in 1874, with jurisdiction extended to the Dominican Republic in 1897. “Ungovernable”? He established the biggest diocese in The Episcopal Church – bigger than William White’s Pennsylvania; bigger than John Henry Hobart’s New York; bigger than anything White Americans built with a 300-year head start. Those dioceses were extensively subdivided, of course, but they still do not rival Haiti in the affections of the people – nor in the mainland’s affection for them. U.S. Episcopalians come to Haiti from everywhere; some dioceses have taken on special responsibilities to assist with mission. The Church there is both weak and strong, and we reverence you, Bishop Holly, one of our greatest missionary bishops.

Most gracious God, by the calling of your servant James Theodore Holly you gave us our first bishop of African-American heritage. We ask your prayers today for the repose of the soul of Sr. Hilary of the Community of the Transfiguration in Cincinnati, Ohio; she died a week ago on her name day, the Feast of St. Hilary of Poitiers, and her funeral will be held this morning. “Receive her into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints of light.” (convent photo)

Giovanni di Paolo, c. 1450: St. Fabian. He was a layman when he was elected Bishop of Rome by acclamation; it’s said that a dove landed on him in the midst of the crowd gathered for the election. As Pope he organized the parochial structure in Rome, appointed deacons and subdeacons to write the lives of martyrs so their memory wouldn’t be lost, and was himself executed for the faith by the Emperor Decius, in the first persecution carried out throughout the empire.

I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting.

Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb has died, the longtime and very successful president of the California State University at Fullerton, widely reported as the first Black woman to head a major U.S. research institution. She was a biologist and had served as dean at two other schools, became a finalist for president of Hunter College in New York City, but was passed over due to pressure from politicians. Her grandfather had been born in slavery, and she faced discrimination too; she started college at the University of Michigan but found that Black students weren't allowed to live on campus, so she transferred. At Fullerton, then a commuter school, she built the first on-campus housing, created new academic departments, pushed for increased minority admissions and campaigned for women in science, tech, engineering and maths. THE LESSON
Mark 1:1-13 (NRSV)

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,

“See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way;
the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.'”

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

A laywoman, she spent four decades advocating for domestic and foreign missions in an era when women were excluded from church governance. But that didn't stop her; she became a traveling evangelist, visiting every U.S. diocese as well as Anglican churches in throughout Asia. On her arrival back in the U.S., she visited up and down the Pacific Coast before making her way back east. Episcopalians have never known anyone like her, a one-woman dynamo.

The 117th Mummers Parade was held in Philadelphia New Year’s Day; it’s the oldest folk festival in the USA, with roots back to 17th Century Europe. It’s an anomaly at best, though, run by a mostly white crowd in a mostly black city and repeatedly criticized for racist, sexist, homophobic imagery. How does this happen in 2017? The costumes are colorful, the organizers should be too. (Associated Press)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
