The new Bishop of Indianapolis Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows was seated on the bishop’s cathedra or throne yesterday at Christ Church Cathedral. Indeed, a cathedral gets its name from a bishop’s special chair, which only she may occupy; likewise, a cathedral is considered the bishop’s own church, and all other churches in a diocese are subordinate to it. Athanasius, Patriarch of Alexandria, was a staunch Trinitarian, and many depictions show him standing on the body of Arius, a heretic who argued that Jesus was subordinate to God the Father and not his equal. The Creed commonly attributed to Athanasius, however, probably did not come from his authorship; his writings never mention it. It was written in Latin, probably originating in Gaul a century after his death, while Athanasius wrote in Greek. This Creed is little used in the West and not at all in the East. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed it cannot, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. John 10:19-42 (NRSV)

Again the Jews were divided because of these words. Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and is out of his mind. Why listen to him?” Others were saying, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. Students at Fr. Daniel Wu’s school at True Sunshine Church in San Francisco, in the early part of the 20th Century. That’s him on the left. His mentor, Deaconess Emma Drant, started this church as well as one across the bay in Oakland, where many Chinese fled after the Great Earthquake of 1906. When Fr. Wu arrived he took over the administration of both while he was a seminary student, and served for the rest of his life.

Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes.

Episcopalians joined other interfaith leaders outside the Indiana governor’s office yesterday to press for passage of a hate crimes bill, in an era of increasing intolerance. Indiana is one of only five U.S. states to lack some kind of bias-related crime statute; a bill failed again in the state Senate but is still alive in the House. (Megan McConnell)

And has he not come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?” Saul became increasingly more powerful and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Messiah.

Caravaggio: Conversion of St. Paul on the Road to Damascus. This experience was very dramatic for him, with instant results like few people go through. It may be useful for us to reflect on our need for ongoing conversion.

President Obama isn’t finished yet, and a few days ago he created more national monuments, including strengthening protections for the civil rights district in Birmingham, Alabama, centered on the 16th Street Baptist Church, where in 1963 four girls were killed and others were maimed while waiting for the start of Sunday School. Four members of the Ku Klux Klan set off 19 sticks of dynamite, but no one was arrested or tried until 1977, when three of the four (the other one had died) were convicted of murder. A year after the bombing, following a monthlong debate, Congress finally passed the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 with bipartisan support. (Associated Press)

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested 30 times in his short life, most notably in Birmingham, where he wrote his famous Letter from a Birmingham Jail; but this is not that booking photo; that day he was wearing blue jeans and a casual shirt. Gloria Naylor has died, the author whose first novel, “The Women of Brewster Place,” won the National Book Award in 1983, and was soon made into a successful miniseries by Oprah Winfrey. When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who put on fine clothing and live in luxury are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written,

‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’

I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” (And all the people who heard this, including the tax collectors, acknowledged the justice of God, because they had been baptized with John’s baptism. But by refusing to be baptized by him, the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves.)

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Collect for Protection

O God, the life of all who live, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who labor, and the repose of the dead: We thank you for the blessings of the day that is past, and humbly ask for your protection through the coming night.
