Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. They shall drink and stagger and go out of their minds because of the sword that I am sending among them.

Parishioners gathered Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, to thank God they were still alive, after a Saturday night tornado flattened their town and killed 26 people from the Mississippi Delta to northern Alabama. The twister was categorized as EF-4, the most dangerous rating, with winds of 166-200 miles per hour and hail the size of golf balls. The Mississippi Delta is one of the poorest areas in the U.S.; its farmers are completely dependent on God and the weather for their livelihood. (Julio Cortez/AP)

God of all mercy,

Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. I can testify that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they have not submitted to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that “the person who does these things will live by them.” But the righteousness that comes from faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?'” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?'” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say?

“The word is near you,
on your lips and in your heart”

(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” His parents answered, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but we do not know how it is that now he sees, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue. Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”

So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.” He answered, “I do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” Then they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” The man answered, “Here is an astonishing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to one who worships him and obeys his will. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. Jesus heard that they had driven him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered, “And who is he, sir? Tell me, so that I may believe in him.” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.” He said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshiped him. Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind.” Some of the Pharisees near him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not blind, are we?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.”

James Solomon Russell was born into slavery in Virginia in 1851. He attended Hampton Institute (now University) for a year and became a teacher, where he made his elementary pupils recite the Apostles Creed every day. This attracted the attention of Episcopalians; one bought him a Prayer Book, he was able to enroll in the Bishop Payne Divinity School, and was ordained a priest. In 1888 he and his wife started St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia, which he served for 40 years. He was twice elected a Suffragan Bishop for Colored Work in the segregated South, which would have made him the first black bishop in the Episcopal Church, but he refused the appointments, which he believed would have brought racial segregation to the House of Bishops. St. Paul’s College educated black students for 125 years before closing in 2013.

O God, the font of resurrected life, we bless you for the courageous witness of your priest, James Solomon Russell, whose ministry overcame all adversities; draw us into the wilderness and speak tenderly to us there so that we might love and worship you as he did, in assurance of the saving grace of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, always and ever. Amen.

The U.S. Army will rename Fort Rucker, Alabama next month for Chief Warrant Officer 4 Michael J. Novosel, Sr., a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1971. The base is the home of Army aviation training; he served as a commercial pilot after every war. To serve in Vietnam at age 41, he gave up his rank as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force and joined the Army, where he flew 2,543 missions and removed 5,589 injured personnel, most notably on 2 October 1969, when he skimmed his chopper close to the ground and rescued 29 men surrounded by thousands of North Vietnamese troops. He died in 2006 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. (U.S. Army)

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him.”

The Monastery of the Caves, also known as Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, is one of the holiest sites in Orthodoxy, but the monks are being evicted 29 March on suspicion that they are loyal to the Russian patriarch. They officially switched sides from Moscow to Kyiv a year ago after Russia invaded, but Ukrainian security filmed a monastery priest talking about the “awakening” of Russia after a service in November, and claims additional evidence it obtained during searches. The Ukrainian government owns the complex and leased it to the monks, who did not join the Orthodox Church of Ukraine recognized by the government, saying they belong instead to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church; Kyiv will not tolerate another brand of Orthodoxy within its territory. As Jesus walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see. The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” Some were saying, “It is he.” Others were saying, “No, but it is someone like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” But they kept asking him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ Then I went and washed and received my sight.” They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”

They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. Then the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes. Then I washed, and now I see.” Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not observe the sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And they were divided. Charles Henry Brent was born in Newcastle, Ontario, the son of the longtime rector; his mother was descended from colonists who fled the American Revolution. He was educated at Trinity College, Toronto, and ordained, but the only work he found was as a curate and organist in Buffalo, New York. He moved to Boston, came under the formative influence of the Cowley Fathers, spent ten years as curate in the underprivileged South End, then in 1901 was shocked to get a telegram naming him missionary Bishop of the Philippines, then governed by the United States. He stayed 15 years, establishing schools and hospitals, before leaving to assume the senior chaplaincy with the Allied Expeditionary Force in World War I. He hated the war and devoted himself afterward to peace and ecumenical activities, before finally returning to western New York, working for international peace and ecumenical unity. (Andreo Bongco)

Who indeed are you, a human being, to argue with God? Will what is molded say to the one who molds it, “Why have you made me like this?”

Jair Bolsonaro, the ousted right-wing president of Brazil, somehow failed to inform his customs agency that Saudi Arabia gave him diamonds worth $3 million, which he forgot to declare. In October 2021 an adviser to the minister for mines and energy carried earrings, a necklace and a ring into Sao Paulo Airport like a bag of chips, but didn’t make it past customs; soon the minister himself appeared on video, informing agents the jewels were for Mrs. Bolsonaro. A diamond watch, pen, ring, cuff links and a rosary did end up in Bolsonaro’s possession, but that didn’t last either, and by the end of his term he sent an army plane to the airport to grab the hot rocks. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us, but if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9

CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. The LORD showed me two baskets of figs placed before the temple of the LORD. This was after King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon had taken into exile from Jerusalem King Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim of Judah, together with the officials of Judah, the artisans, and the smiths, and had brought them to Babylon. One basket had very good figs, like first-ripe figs, but the other basket had very bad figs, so bad that they could not be eaten. And the LORD said to me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” I said, “Figs, the good figs very good, and the bad figs very bad, so bad that they cannot be eaten.”

Then the word of the LORD came to me: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so I will regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I have sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans. I will set my eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up, and not tear them down; I will plant them, and not pluck them up. I will give them a heart to know that I am the LORD; and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart.

But thus says the LORD: Like the bad figs that are so bad they cannot be eaten, so will I treat King Zedekiah of Judah, his officials, the remnant of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and those who live in the land of Egypt. You will say to me then, “Why then does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” But who indeed are you, a human being, to argue with God? Will what is molded say to the one who molds it, “Why have you made me like this?” Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one object for special use and another for ordinary use? What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience the objects of wrath that are made for destruction; and what if he has done so in order to make known the riches of his glory for the objects of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory—including us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles?

As indeed he says in Hosea, “Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’ and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.'” “And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ there they shall be called children of the living God.” And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, “Though the number of the children of Israel were like the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved; for the Lord will execute his sentence on the earth quickly and decisively.” And as Isaiah predicted, “If the Lord of hosts had not left survivors to us, we would have fared like Sodom and been made like Gomorrah.”

What then are we to say? Gentiles, who did not strive for righteousness, have attained it, that is, righteousness through faith; but Israel, who did strive for the righteousness that is based on the law, did not succeed in fulfilling that law. Why not? Because they did not strive for it on the basis of faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, “See, I am laying in Zion a stone that will make people stumble, a rock that will make them fall, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

Evening Prayer 26.3.23, Fifth Sunday in Lent

“For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. ”

A killer tornado ripped through the Mississippi Delta Friday night, killing 25, injuring dozens more, flipping cars in the air and flattening whole blocks. Above, Wonder Bolden holds her granddaughter as she surveys what remains of her mother’s home in Rolling Fork. “There’s nothing left,” she said. The storm was categorized as EF-4, with top wind speeds of 166 to 200 miles per hour and hail the size of golf balls. The storm traveled 170 miles as it blew north and east into Morgan County, Alabama, where one person was pronounced dead. Storm chasers quit following the twister to drive people to the hospital; a TV meteorologist prayed to Jesus on the air as he watched new data come in. Morning Prayer 26.3.23, Fifth Sunday in Lent

Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let the one who has my word speak my word faithfully.

Rwanda announced it has commuted the 25-year sentence of Paul Rusesabagina, a hero of the Rwandan Genocide in 1994, who sheltered over 1000 Tutsis as seen in the film “Hotel Rwanda.” He’s a Belgian citizen who lives in the U.S., but in 2020 he was kidnapped while visiting Dubai and transported to Rwanda, charged with abduction, murder and belonging to a terrorist group, apparently for criticizing the human rights abuses of Rwanda’s longtime president Paul Kagame. Rusesabagina’s conviction after a sham trial was widely criticized, and Rwanda found itself with a famous prisoner and a ticked-off superpower in Washington. He’s now scheduled to leave for Dubai and the U.S. this weekend after medical attention. (Muhisi Olivier/AP, 2021)

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned—sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man’s trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. Therefore just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

Charles Henry Pace, a pioneer Gospel music composer and publisher, is being rediscovered at the University of Pittsburgh, with a new exhibit of photos, manuscripts, published fragments and even metal printing plates of his music from the 1920s to the ’50s. He died in 1963, his store was sold and his archives went with it. Thirty years later, the university bought the archives, stuck them in a storeroom and left them untouched for 20 years, before music historian Christopher Lynch discovered and started cataloguing them. “I quickly realized that ‘Oh, we had something here,’” said Lynch. Now Pace is taking his place as a Gospel music founder and forerunner of Thomas Dorsey, who’s often thought of as the central figure in the development of Gospel. Many of Pace’s most recorded songs were erroneously attributed as Traditional Spirituals instead of credited to him; Thomas Dorsey, Louis Armstrong and W.C. Handy were customers of his. Pace also founded the Pace Jubilee Singers, one of the first Black groups to make recordings and sing on the radio, and the Pace Choral Union, which grew to a 200-voice choir. His daughter Frances grew up in his music store, managed by his wife and partner Frankie Pace, a well-known community activist. After their death, Frances lost track of the 14 cartons of memorabilia; she hasn’t heard the songs in 40 years, but she’ll hear them again tomorrow when the city rededicates its Frankie Mae Pace Park with a live concert of Charles Pace’s music in the church where he performed much of it, Tabernacle Baptist. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.

Apaches in California and Arizona appeared before a full panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit Tuesday, trying to stop a giant copper mine from destroying sacred lands outside Phoenix; they argue that the project violates their right to practice their religion. Two giant Anglo-Australian mining companies won the right in 2014 when Congress inserted a rider in a must-pass defense authorization bill; the proposed mine would be the largest copper mine in the U.S., supplying one-fourth of the nation’s needs for 40 years, generating thousands of jobs and adding $1 billion to Arizona’s economy. Activists calling themselves Apache Stronghold demonstrated outside the courtroom, including this 4-year-old girl. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act prohibits the government from creating a “substantial burden” on the practice of religion, but Washington argues that the law is superseded by the defense bill, and it plans to republish its environmental review soon, creating a two-month period in which the 3.5 square mile land swap must occur. Law schools at the University of Notre Dame and St. Thomas University are backing the Apaches, who lost before a 3-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit, which agreed to ask the full panel of 11 judges to rehear the case. “Oak Flat is where my people have come to connect with our Creator for millennia, and we have the right to continue that sacred tradition,” said a spokesperson for Apache Stronghold. “Today we stood up in court for that right, determined to stop those who think that our place of worship can be treated differently simply because it lacks four walls and a steeple.” (Damian Dovarganes/AP)

God’s only son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,

THE PRAYERS

Gregory’s success in converting Armenia was by no means assured; his father had assasinated the previous king years before. Gregory returned from exile to atone for his father’s crime, and the old king’s son, now on the throne himself, threw him in a pit for a dozen years. Later, they reconciled. (source unknown)

Almighty God, who raised up your servant Gregory to be a light in the world, and to preach the Gospel to the people of Armenia: Illuminate our hearts, that we also in our generation may show forth your praise, who called us out of darkness and into your marvelous light; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A Collect for the Presence of Christ

Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand and the day is past; be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that we may know you as you are revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread. Grant this for the sake of your love. Amen.

Give them true friends who understand them and knowledgable therapists with competence and compassion. Soothe their worries, lift their spirits, help them to trust others, quiet their negative thinking, help them care for themselves, and give them peace; through the infinite mercy of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
