Last year the Shequaga Falls in western New York were almost dry, which gave visitors a chance to see the exposed layers of shale; they look like stairsteps coming down, when it’s really just natural erosion made more scenic by the rock layers. The falls are near Montour Falls, N.Y. in Schuyler County. Still, the image is a bit sad, because the park is built for visitors, and few came. (Charles Haeffner)

Jesus said, “For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
