Andrew, Peter’s brother, was the first apostle called by Jesus. The historian Eusebius reports that Andrew went to Scythia in Asia Minor to conduct his mission, and this icon honors him as the First Ecumenical Patriarch of Contantinople. He is also the patron saint of Scotland, after an ancient king invoked his aid in battle against the Angles.
