Martha Swope has died, the famed New York photographer of dance productions and Broadway musicals. She was a dancer herself when she was pressed into service to photograph a rehearsal, and she instinctively knew the best angles and lighting to capture what dancers, choreographers and directors were doing. For 50 years and 800 productions, she photographed every show of any importance in the city, from Jerome Robbins, George Balanchine and Alvin Ailey to Mikhail Baryshinov, John Travolta and Liza Minnelli, she was the go-to photographer for newspapers, magazines and books – and she made everyone look flawless.
